I am in the market for some new tubes. I have been told that I should change them all, had the amp for about 5 years on only changed the power tubes as they died, and only 4 have died so far. My band plays melodic death metal. Fast stuff and we tune to drop A on 7s. :D I dont know if this matters but it cant hurt. I play though an Agile Interceptor Pro with a Bare knuckle War pig in the dridge. I want to get a MXT EQ because of all the great news I hear about them but I think i should change my tubes first. Its starting to sound like ass.

Cheers!

PS - before I get slammed, YES. I did use the search function. Nothing came up. :p

EDIT - It would probably help to know that I'm playing through a Triple Recto.

as for power tubes try the sovtekWXLT+ they kick. and for preamps try the eh12ax7a (electroharmonix)
i use this set up seems to kick for me, but i use a 3 ch dual rect.

Would there be much of a difference?

BTW - this is the set I was thinking about getting - http://thetubestore.com/sba-mesa-3ch-triplerectifier2.html

Thanks again

I strongly recommand you don't use the same 5 tubes in the 5 preamp spots. All brands sound different and all of the 5 preamp spots play a different rôle in the signal, you will improve your tone by testing different tubes in all the different spots. I play in a death metal band and i have tried many tubes in the 3 different DR revisions i own. The regular (not NOS) tubes i found worked better for metal were:
- V1 and V3 : JJ ecc83s
- V2: Electro Harmonix
- V4: shugang 9th generation
-V5: tungsol reissue
these are all great tubes for metal, but they don't give me exactly what i want if i put them elsewhere in the other spots.

This is my personnal cocktail, but since we don't use the same pedals, guitars, etc... and certaintly don't have the same playing and taste, i'm sure you would come up with a different receipe.

So my point is, buy a bunch of different tubes instead of 5 of the same brand, some you will like enough to get a few more and restart the testing over again in all of the preamp positions to try and "beat" the ones you chose first.
all of these tubes are not expensive so experiment.

The TADs are pretty good in rectos, but if im correct, I think the are just relabled Shuguang chinese 6L6GCs. You could save some money if thats true. Maybe someone else can confirm this. I think though, the best for a TR is SED =C= 6L6GCs.

For preamps, never heard the TADs. actually never knew they existed til now. I recomend this

V1 - Tung Sol RI 12ax7
V2 & V3 - JJ high gain ECC83S
V4 - chinese C8/C9 12ax7 or JJ ECC83S
V5 - Sovtek 12AX7LPS (balanced if you like - i never do)

If i had to pick one preamp tube for all position in a recto, it would choose any of the ones I mentioned except the JJ. too dark on its own...for my taste

What do you think about these???

https://ssl.eurotubes.com/cart/index.php?page=view_products&category_id=6&sub_category_id=74

The kit at the bottom.

Been looking around and I think I am torn between 2 kits.
1 - http://shop.elitevacuumtubes.com/product.sc?productId=82&categoryId=18
2 - https://ssl.eurotubes.com/cart/index.php?page=view_products&category_id=6&sub_category_id=74 (Kit at the very bottom)

I have heard good things about both companies but I don't understand why one kit is $75 more than the other.

Also, since I am changing the pre and power tubes, I figured I'd change my rectifier tubes to these - https://ssl.eurotubes.com/cart/index.php?page=product_details&category_id=4&sub_category_id=26&product_id=GZ34

Let me know what ya'll think

I love and use the WXT+ for Power Tubes and the EH preamp tubes in my Dual Recto. Great combo.

I noticed this amp in your equipment list.
2008 FJA Mods Mesa Dual Recto

Is that the one you use the above tube set in? If that amp is modded, how much of the kick a@@ tone is from the mods versus the tubes? I went to the FJA site and they do some brutal amp mods...

Yes that is what I run in the FJA Recto. I actually had TAD's in it, but after going to NYC and back (I live near Seattle), they were shot upon returning. I didnt like how the low end sat in the mix anyways. Too separated for me.

I just posted a review of the amp in this section.
