Before you start pointing fingers at the recto pre I suggest you plug it into the effects return of a guitar amp and see how it sounds. The best thing would probably plug it straight into your friend's Recto head effects return and see if it sounds better.

Yes that explains a little bit. So many things could have happened.... the piece could have had a problem prior to the sale, shipping damaged it, a tube has been bad all along, etc.


I think it would be best to just bring it to a Mesa dealer and have them swap the tubes out and do their magic. I bet you could get it diagnosed for free if you bring it in a store and just have them troubleshoot it on the spot.

I suspect that without a speaker emulator you're not going to get a sharp bass response that you can feel. The resonances of the cabinet are very important. I need to turn up the "Thump" control on my ADA MicroCab to about 3:00 to get that nice responsive chug.
 
Hmmm. I myself can't imagine using modern for a bass hefty sound or feel. You can crank the mid range for a more woolly sound. As I remember, even cranking the bass in modern will give you just more lower mids, which is cool in itself.
