Hello there! im new on this board because i got myself a Mesa boogie single rectifier with a Mesa boogie cab the other day!

The cab i got was a little bit smaller then a regular cab, it has four "Black shadow" speakers and it's partially open on the backside.
I don't have a clue what it is, can't find any info about it anywhere! :(

The thing is that i don't like the sound of it, it sounds very "open/airy" and not precise at all!
Can i just get a new plate to cover the whole back?

I found a picture of the cab...

Let me hear your thoughts! :)

I apologize for my bad English! :/

Mesa makes a 3/4 back series of cabs that have a cutout like that, but I can only find information on 1x12 and 2x12 versions. I'm going to guess the 4x12 wasn't very popular and that they discontinued it a long time ago. It should be good for clean and overdriven guitar... country, jazz, blues, stuff like that. Tighter rock and metal tones though... not so much.

There's no reason you couldn't install a full back panel on it. It won't hurt anything.

Get a piece of good birch plywood from the local home remodeling store or lumber yard. Match the thickness of the existing panel. You could just paint it black, or cover it with that spray on truck bed liner stuff, etc......if you don't want to bother with tolex. The rubber stuff is good because you want to do anything you can to prevent the panel from buzzing at loud volumes.

The trade off, in my opinion, is that with a closed back you will lose some low end, even though the low end may sound tighter or more accurate. The "fix" that I like is to have a front ported cab with a closed back. It will sound huge again.

The black shadow is just a custom spec'd Celestion, so if you don't like Celestions (I do not) then that could be part of the reason why you don't like the black shadows. If so, then consider trying some Eminence Patriot series speakers in there, like Texas Heats or Red White & Blues, CRex, etc. Mesa amps also sound good with the high power series Weber speakers. The black shadows will have good resale value (no I will not buy them from you! LOL!) and you will probably get more than you need to buy 4 Eminence.

Thanks for the advice people! I will try to get some plywood and close it!

Too bad it got great reviews on this site..
