When I emailed Doug recently he gave me the follow the recommendations for my Quad pre:

"The usual mix of 12AX7's I've been doing in the Mesa MK series is this:
V1 - Tung-Sol reissue 12AX7
V2 - High gain JJ ECC83S
V3 - Penta Labs 12AX7C
V4 - Shuguang 12AX7C9
V5 - Sovtek 12AX7LPS

I would suggest you work around this for the Quad preamp and I think your
problems will be solved.

Regards,
Doug"

Haven't pulled the trigger on buying new tubes as I'm still trying sure to figure out how to adapt this for the Quad.

So far I've come up with configuration:

V11 - Input Tube for Ch.2 - Tung Sol reissue
V21 - Input Tube for Ch.1 - Tung Sol reissue
V12 - Ch1. and Ch.2 - ?
V22 - Effects Return & Output - ?
V13 - Lead for Ch.2 - Shuguang 12AXC9
V23 - Lead for Ch.1 - Shuguang 12AXC9
V14 - EQ & Reverb Mixer - ?
V24 - Reverb Driver & Return - ?

Need to fill in the blanks. 8 positions doesn't make it easy.

Check my recent quad retube out.... might help a bit:
