PS. We are still looking for an amp to suit his needs. A Lonestar would be perfect, but it's double his price range. Any advice on tube amps, 20-40W, two channels (Clean/Texas), separate EQ and reverb? He will use a Fender Strat and a hollow body semi-acoustic.

Look into the older DC-5 or the new F-50. I think the Fender Hot Rod DeVille is great sounding.

Today my brother came to me asking advice on amps. He's into clean stuff and we went through Vox, Marshall, Fender and Orange on Youtube. I wanted to illustrate the difference between super clean and tube saturated clean (he's very new to amps), so I fired up my Mesa.

Usually I keep it low. I'm kind of a weak person always worrying about disturbing anyone which hinders me from really cranking the amp. But this time I did. I put it in clean, cranked it and was simply amazed. I had never heard my amp sound like that before. It was as if the other channels were completely unnecessary, because I found all the 'oomph' and string definition I ever needed right there. I cranked the Gain, cranked the Bass, cranked the Treble and put the Master on 11 and the Output on 3 (o'clock).

WOW. So much growl.. and string definition. It just blistered and sounded so beautiful. Hendrix on steroids. Then he asked me how to get that "bell-like jazzy tone" and I rolled back the Gain and guitar volume and used the neck pickup. "Well, usually they do something like this" I said, convinced my Mesa couldn't do it but wanted to show him anyway.

The random tone I got was the most beautiful thing I've ever heard. It was round and mellow, yet full of harmonics.. it instantly made me want to have a wife who left me, a boss that hassled me and a crappy life in general. That was the tone, made for expressing self pity and I hated myself for not knowing how to do Jazz.

One thing came to mind. Now, I haven't A/B:ed anything, but when people say that the Recto clean is weak.. did you really crank it? Because it's seriously the most beautiful thing I've ever heard and the same goes for the reverb - it grows with the power stage and sounds excellent on tube saturated levels. It gets thicker, louder and "too much" above 1 o'clock.

All in all, I had an epiphany. For the first time I really felt that I loved my amp, not struggling to find the tone. Now I can't wait to record it!

I used to play through a Rect -O-Verb as I was amazed by the clean channel in that amp . The Recto's get a bad rap for the cleans but i wonder sometimes if people know what they are talking about .

I've owned a 4x10 deville (very noisy) and my father has rotated out vibrokings, twins, deluxe reverbs, etc, and you have to crank the piss out of all of them to get that wallop you're looking for. Out of all of them, the Deluxe Reverb was my favorite.

I think this is the wrong place for this if you're not considering Mesa products.

Na, I already payed the membership fee (see sig) ;) and am actually asking for a non-Mesa Lonestar. But yeah, kinda two topics in this post. The epiphany (right place) and the amp questions ("other amps" part of the board).

Platypus, noisy in what way.. do Twin/DeVille have a crunchy second channel, or is the distortion completely based on tube overdrive?

It's completely based on tube overdrive, there's very little crunchy tones in my opinion unless you've pegged the amp. You're probably going to just want to run a dirty stomp box in front of it to get the tones you want.

There are lots of great amps out there--Mesas just happen to be one of them. They are pricey though so not everyone can afford them--Sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do. Do I need to mention that Mesas were originally derived from Fenders? Fender made the amps, Randal just perfected them--hence the lawsuit by CBS Fender back in the 70's against Mesa. Just a thought--
