My buddy needs a new amp but is on a tight budget. I like the new Vypyr tube head for the price and veratility but other than noodling on one at the store I have no experience with these. Anybody out there have one?

I have messed with the 60 watt tube-powered combo and really liked it a lot. The modes on it offer a lot of flexibility and they sound pretty close to what they are representing. I wouldn't mind having one of the lower wattage combos as a jam amp, but, the little Kustom I have right now isn't dead yet, so, I haven't bought one. Doesn't this have a tube power section? If it doesn't then my only concern would be how the head sounds cranked in a live situation, because my experience with SS amps is, they sound great a bedroom levels, and really loose definition and clarity when turned up.

Yeah, the head I'm looking at has 4 6L6's in it. I went and played it again last night and had a chance to crank it a bit. The Diezel and Recto models sounded really really good and I was able to get a really nice chimey clean out of it as well. It certainly aint no Mesa but it's $600 out the door brand new with a footswitch and warranty. :?

Those are the two modes I went to as well! And that is a good price for a Tube powered head with so many options brand new.

Well, my buddy got the head and I think I may put the 60 watt combo on layaway. We play at a lot of little bars and I can't get my Mark IV past 1-1/2 so maybe a this little guy will be my new beater amp.

You know, a guitar player I know uses a Peavy Trans-tube combo, and I was pretty impressed. Beaters work good for bars anyway, least in my redneck of the woods.

Yeah, it really sucks when you have a Mark IV head and a 4x12 cab and the soundguy won't let you turn it up past bedroom volume. Not to mention having to guard it all night from shambling drunks who think your gear is their drink holder. But when I played a couple outdoor shows last summer where the guitars weren't mic'd.....
