OT: Volume pedal @ loop vs Power Attenuator?

these are completely opposite and different techniques, that get you to different places.

they both work.

you must experiment with BOTH to know what you want it to do for you.

A volume pedal in the loop is doing the same thing as your output (master volume) control, attenuating the volume BEFORE the power section of the amp.

A power soak (hot plate, power brake, etc) attenuates the signal AFTER the power section (at the speaker).

On an amp that gets alot of it's Overdrive from powertube distortion this will allow that cranked amp tone at lower volume levels.

What amp were you considering these approaches for?

So there's no point of using a volume pedal in the loop on an amp that's got a master volume?

I wouldn't say that, it gives you remote control of your global volume. Great for "dropping back" in quieter parts of a song without losing gain and tone from the front end.

Redundent? Yes.

Useful? Absolutly.
