Just got a used mkv head. It's seems very bright, a bit toppy, you can really hear the strings on the frets if that makes any sense. When set up to petrucci settings per his vid, it sounds nothing like that. There is bottom end but the brightness is what concerns me. I also have a rectoverb 25 , the cleans are warmer on that amp.

So, I'm using a rg550 with air norton bridge, paf joe neck. I get similar result with my les paul wcr Fillmore pickups. Speakers are Marshall 2x12 with gt75s, or a boogie thiele with weber blue dog ceramic.

I'm wondering if it's a tube issue that was damaged during shipping? Or speaker choice?

Hi... I'm not sure if Petrucci use the mesa tubes in his amps, but if you are after petrucci tone the Mark V alone it's not enough... get a 4x12 loaded with mesa V30 recto cab or at least a 2x12 recto cab (v30 too) and a EBMM JP guitar with crunch lab and liquid fire pickups and then begin to dial in looking for that particular tone.

Greetings

His settings may not work for you. Try lowering the treble and or presence and see if that helps.

Yes. V30 is good. The more the better! :D

Those 75s won't do your V much justice, and I'm afraid that the C90 in your Thiele box won't either. In fact, the C90 alone could be responsible for the unpleasant high frequencies you are experiencing - I have no idea why Mesa insists putting it stock in Mark V combos, it clearly doesn't mesh well with the V. (Some older Mesa combos I had actually sounded quite good with the stock C90.)

I would try V30s first. Or try dialing out the offending high frequencies. Always trust your ears. It's pointless to use someone else settings as such when the rest of your signal chain isn't the same.
