So I've replaced all power and preamp stock tubes in my Triple Recto with JJs(E34L and ECC83S). I get a lot of disruptive noise(could be described as a light wind-blowing sound mixed in with some crackling). After trying different combinations, I see the problem is coming from the preamp tubes. Thing is, I cannot seem to isolate the problem to one tube! I swap V2 and V3(where I suspect the problem is coming from)with all JJs, but ALL seem to cause noise. If I put the replaced tubes back in, the noise is not there. Are all five tubes possibly defective, or am I missing something here?

Sure you can...

Leave the quite ones in there and only put in one new one at a time. Start with V1.

I can surely attest to having a few noisey JJ's from Bob at Eurotubes. And I tell you what... I was a steady customer for years and spent large with him. When I sent in one of my Mark III in for a tuneup to Mesa Boogie I sent all new JJ's still in their boxes for Mike B to use. He told me two of the new ones that i had sent along with an amp were too noisy to use and he left the original mesa tubes in those positions. When I got it back I called Bob at Eurotubes and told him what mike B told me. He argued considerably with me over those two little tubes. He absolutely told me he was not at fault for the tubes being noisy etc. Did you put them in "dusty sockets" and did you install them correctly yadi yadi etc. he just kept up with it being someone elses fault. I just stopped doing business with him.

If you got yours somewhere else I will edit this out about Bob. But if you did... you may as well eat them.

I too have had some "Mystery" sounds with JJ Preamp tubes. I gave them a serious shot with my LSC when I was doing some serious 5 night a week gigging. I found that there is a lot of hype about tubes and how they can give your amp this and that, and I agree to a point, but when all said and done I just didn't get it.
Find some good NOS pre's and leave the new stuff alone!

I thought for a long time the more money tubes cost, the better.

But recently I have found that not to be true. My Sovtek WXT+'s spank the JJ 6L6's. And there is a $40 difference in price, ya know?

But I am suspecting noisy JJ's in my Rev. E Recto. Strange whooshing noises when not playing and things of that nature.

I used JJs in the B52 AT-100 head I had and the amp smoked with those in it... they could be a little noisy though... I've never tried JJs in my Roadster though. Might give those Sovteks a try though when I need to retube.

Had the same kind of "wind" noise and crackling in my old 22+ after putting new JJ's in it. Changed them out and the "sound" was gone....
Nowadays, I primarily use EH, TungSols and a few really OLD tubes I've rat-holed over the years in my Ace and now DC-2. The JJ's are spares...

I gather you are talking about pre amp tubes? or the el84's?
I use a JJ 'x7 in v2 of my Ace and it is working out well...no unusual noise....tames that "Stiletto brightness" well.
I also have a 22+, as does a friend of mine. He uses JJ el84's and they have been great! I still have the Mesa's in mine, but am about due to replace 'em. Do you have any experience/comments about the JJ el84's?

Or anyone else out there?

thanks, and HAPPY FRIDAY! :D :D :D :D :D

Sorry about that BF...it was pretty late last nite when I posted that. :?

It was the power tubes, the EL84's, that were noisy. Actually I had 2 different sets do that to me at different times, so I'm a little gunshy on JJ's. Really though, Bob at Eurotubes is great...he's been VERY helpful to me the last few years, can't fault him for having tubes passing thru his shop to me.

Anyway, hope this helps someone down the line...and yes, TGIF!!! :D
