Hi everyone- I have been playing for 15 years now and gigged with an F50, so am very familiar with the Mesa reliability and great tone. About 3 months ago finally purchased a real rig- Dual Rectifier 100w head and 4x12 cabinet. I love it and am very happy with it. HOWEVER! The clean channel has this horrific buzzing sound that is obviously not right and I am thinking it is a tube, but don't want to take it in for an entire retube. I did buy it used and channels 2 and 3 seem fine, but take a listen to the clip and let me know your thoughts. As you can see it is when it is on the pushed setting, but also when the clean setting is pushed a bit.

Thanks!

I can't figure out how to embed :-/

do you have any spare 12ax7s that you know that are good?

It sounds like it may be the second triode on V1. since its only impacting CH1 and not 2 or 3.

Get another 12ax7 and swap V1 out. If you have the same issue when you replace V1, put the old V1 back and try V2, etc...

If you tried all tubes and the issue is still there then it is something internal.

I don't have any spare 12AX7s but I assume a music store can direct me to the right one. Are there any tricks to replacing it? Any suggestions on which ones to get?

Thanks

I prefer Ruby's 12ax7 HG+. JJ is what I last heard Mesa is using. Many ppl in these forums are happy with Tungsol in V1.

Im not sure if you have access to the preamp tubes without removing the power tubes, as I never owned a full sized recto. But you will need to make sure the amp is OFF (obviously) before starting.

Just watch this video. Id recommend watching the entire thing, but preamp starts at @ 9:00 in.

Great- I will get to this on the weekend and hopefully this fixes things.

Thanks!

Im thinking so, since he hasnt posted back. He's to busy losing his hearing in front of his recto ;)

Sorry everyone I feel like a terrible person. I literally just got around to replacing this last night as I had been traveling like a maniac for work. I did watch the video as posted so that was a great resource. As for the sound, it seems to have cleared up and gone away, but there is definitely a funny noise when I turn the gain to 11 and use the push setting on the clean channel. Almost like when the chord or note is left to sustain it kinda distorts and fizzles a little bit, but not like the previous video where the thing was hissing.

I'm not sure what this could be, but I have been away so much I do just want to play and damage my hearing. :) I will play it over the holidays here and report back as to what I find. Thanks again!
