My Roadster has been sounding a bit weird lately. Normally I don't like a whole lot of treble but on the 3rd channel I got the treble and presence cranked and it still doesn't seem like enough at times. Is this a sign of possible tube failure? I got the amp used about 2 years ago (no clue how long it was used before then) so my guess is new tubes couldn't hurt.

First question, retube kit or buy individually? If individual what would you guys recommend for high gain and drop tuning? I'll be using all kinds of tunings and playing different styles but for the most part it's gotta be good for higher gain. Looking for a tight low end and clarity (just got an 8 string).

Second question, is it better to change all the tubes at once or just change certain positions?

Last question, how do I tell if a rectifier tube is on it's way out?

Sounds like your power tubes are done. Put four new 6L6s in it and call it a day. Your preamp tubes should still be fine so no point in replacing them at the same time.

The ones used by Mesa are Chinese tubes sourced through Ruby Tubes and are good sounding tubes. If you like the way your Roadster sounded before I'd just get another set.

The first thing to do when buying an used tube amp is to replace the power tubes unless you can be sure it was already relatively new and unused. About the preamp tubes it's more a matter of tone and taste than of wear issues. Go with Mesa's or Sovtek's for the power section and you'll be good.
