Im playing the clean channel, i switch to vintage high gain, and kaput. i get fading in/out, annoying thin distorted tones no matter what channel i go to, severe loss in volume. Put all new tubes in it, still doing the same thing.

i take out my 4ohm cab, and plug in my 8 ohm cab (into the 8ohm slot on the back), and it appears to be fixed.

What happened to my 4ohm jack? there are two 4 ohm jacks, and it has the same problem on both, even when i plug a different cabinet into it...

im confused, and annoyed. i want this amp to play right for ONCE

It sounds to me like your output transformer might have shorted somewhere between the 4 and 8 ohm taps.

See if this helps: Give the output tranny a sharp whack with a blunt object like a screwdriver handle. It's the one that's laying down. The OT in my Hammond organ was doing the same thing, and that solved it...probably only temporarily, but I'm going to run it until it no longer works.
