was just jamming on it... like I do every night... put the guitar down for a few minutes.. and then all of the sudden.. massive HUM and the two outer power tubes are lighting up the wall behind the amp glowing BRIGHT orange (im talking like lightbulb bright)...

looks like i am without an amp for a while...

time to call mesa in the morning and see what they say...

this could have happened a few days ago right so i could just go in and swap the amp at GC

You probably just have bad power tubes. One died which then took down the other in the matched set. Though as bad as you just described the light coming from the back, it would have been nice if the fuse went.

As long as the tubes going bad didn't take anything else out, you will be back up and running as soon as you through some new tubes in.

Plus, if I am not mistaken, you have a 90 day warranty on tubes (not 100%, might be wrong), but if that is the case you won't even have to pay for them. Call Mesa.

OOhhh. Just realized. Mesa customer support is closed Fridays I think. Call anyway to verify

One other thing, on some Mesa's that didn't have a wattage switch, dual rec for instance, you could pull a pair of power tubes and it would make the amp 50 watts instaead of 100.

Maybe if you have an authorized Mesa Tech in your area, he could tell you if it is OK to run the ED with just two power tubes, and tell you what two power tubes (inner or outer) that it uses in 45 watt mode.

That's is rough for sure....I "did my time" with some ED problems- but it all worked out,...Mesa has a 6 month warranty on tubes, so no worries-

Both tubes at once?
Sounds like you may have lost the bias voltage. Unless those are the "Simul" tubes (not sure....)

At least you know Mesa will stand behind it, if you can't exchange it at GC right away.
My new Ace was a lemon at first, too...got it fixed.....now it purrs like a kitten!

Good luck with that! :)

Let us know what it was in the end. I suspect you had one power tube fail which in turn caused the other to fail. I'm also curious if it took anything else out on the way down.

1)Did your amp blow its fuse?

2)Does your amp still work in 45w mode? You can take out the outer tubes and try it, IIRC.

Either they built my ED *** backwards, or the manual is wrong about the 45 watt mode. When I switch mine to 45W (EL-34 bias and tubes), the outer left and outer right tubes are the ones that are active. When I read my manual, it looks as if they did a little "copy and paste" from the MarkV manual concerning the 45W power setting.

Mine is the same as well. I'm sure it's a screw up in the manual. You can tell because when you come out standby, the outer tubes are the ones that get that blue glow to them while the inner ones stay the same. When you do 90 watts all four glow blue!

I also wondered about the simulclass thing in 45 watt mode. It seems to me all the other Mesa amps that would do simulclass were always class A at half power and a mixture of class A and class AB in full power.

I want to get some EL34's but I don't want to buy 4, just two. I wonder if I left the inner slots empty and just put EL34's in the outer tubes if it would hurt it.

That's right, JOEY, I just couldn't remember exactly how.

At any rate, all of our Boogies with power switching appear to function normally when there are tubes physically missing, so long as the power setting you're using doesn't need the missing tubes.

well in case anyone was wondering... i fixed my amp by replacing the power tubes... i gave trying to contact mesa support.. they never called me back and nobody is every available in the support department... so my first support experience with mesa has left me feeling pretty sour about the company... spend 1700 dollars on your product and you can't even have the courtesy to return my calls when it blows up.

anyways... problem solved with new tubes.

Thanks for filling us in!

But I am very surprised about you not getting a call back. I have probably called them 15-20 times over the years and always got a call back. Most times the same day, once or twice the next.

Maybe it was because of the holidays???

Hell, one day Marcus spent 10 minutes on the phone with me helping me troubleshoot an out of warranty 10 year old second hand Mark IV. He stayed on the phone as I was swapping out preamp tubes.

That's a bummer. I hope if you do need to call them again your next experience is better.

Glad to see it was just power tubes. That could happen to any amp at any time.

It's also good to know when they went they didn't take anything else out!

I agree about the excellent customer service. Talked to Marcus a couple of times and he always called me back very quickly and was eager to answer my questions.

Mesa has always returned phone calls- definately not the norm

Same for me, every time I've called them they have returned my calls that day, or the next if it's close to closing time. I did my ED warranty over the phone and they were very easy to get ahold of. At least your amp is working, even though customer service didn't work for you!

Your tubes have a 6 month warranty - Call back

They have always been good about returning my calls. Probably just a fluke
