Hey Guys,

Thanks to a few weeks of experimentation and all the knowledge I've picked up by reading these forums, I'm now armed with a very versatile bunch of tones that cover a variety of musical genres on my Mark V. The one tone I'm missing out on is the modern recto sounding tone. Now the obvious solution is to get a Dual Rectifier/Roadster/Road King but that is not financially viable or practical. The tones I'm looking for are something close to DT's As I Am, Stream of Consciousness, or anything else from Train of Thought. Since I cannot get the real thing, I need to find a workaround with pedals.

To get close to the recto tone with a Mark V I'm hoping to be able to connect a pedal to the MKV's clean channel (fat mode) at 45 watts and then use tube rectification to get some "sag." What pedals would you guys recommend for this purpose? I've heard good things about the keeley modded Boss MT-2 but Boss pedals are notorious for their tone sucking "feature". I've also heard good things about the Blackstar Dist-X (It also has two tubes I think). Any feedback you might have on these pedals or recommendations for other similar pedals would be great.

Thanks,
Supreeth

I suprisd you haven't nailed it with the Extreme setting yet.
Here are my settings:
Extreme, 45 watt, bright on
Gain: 4 oclock
Master to taste
Presense: 10:30
Treble: 3 oclock
mid: 1:30
Bass: Noon
Preset EQ at full.

The Dist-X is in my opintion the best option
The only other one you may want to check are:
Seymour Duncan Metal Mayhem or whatever it's called
Barber Dirty Bomb
emma pisdiyauwot (not out yet)
Metal Muff was OK.
All metal zones modded or not totally suck.

Thanks man. To be honest I haven't yet played with the Extreme mode on Channel 3 other than a cursory look a few weeks ago. I've been focused on dialing in tones on the IIc+ and IV modes. I will definitely tweak the Extreme mode when I get home from work using the settings you posted as a baseline. It'll be awesome if I didn't have to shell out for a Dist. pedal!

Thanks,

I tried out the settings theroan suggested last night, and while they were quite similar to my own settings (posted in another thread on nasal sounding cabs), pumping the bass up and putting it in 45 W mode made a HUGE difference in a good way. I jammed to Stream of Consciousness last night and it sounded great. I prefer using the triodes for this as opposed to the pentodes. The only part I did not like was that the lead tone stayed fizzy but that was cured in a jiffy by adding some delay and verb. Great tone altogether, and I will continue tweaking. Thanks!

Ya different cabs will do different things. I have a 2x12 vert and I don't lack for bass and I find dialing out fizziness is pretty easy. I like the pento mode though, but I should try more triode too.

I like the pentodes as well but for recto type tones I prefer the triodes :) I have a 2x12 horizontal recto cab too and the bass being pumped out by that cab is *really* cool!! Do you use an EQ in the loop to dial out fizziness? So far I've just tried to cover it up by adding delay!

Well the whole reason I went with ther Mark series is so I wouldn't have to use an eq in the loop. I find the graphic EQ to be fizzy, but the preset eq is great to my ears. But thats keeping in mind that the presense and treble are also at reasonable levels.

There are no pedals IMO that can produce Recto high gain tones thru the clean channel of any amp.
In this area the Mesa chant is correct - there are no substitues for a Mesa - beware of imitations.
The Keeley mod makes the MT-2 an OK pedal and it won't tone suck but there's still several better metal pedals than that.
But none of them replicate any of the Rectifier amps well.
If your Mark V won't get you close you'll need one of Rectifier amps.

Thanks guys. After a couple of days experimentation I think I have the tone I need without needing a separate distortion pedal. I used the settings theroan posted as a baseline for my tone and tweaked from there but it is more or less the same tone with presence backed down a little. I am also using a fulltone OCD as a clean boost. The extreme mode is still articulate, rich with harmonics and sounds great!

Fulltone OCD + Channel 3 = Gain heaven :D

Lowering the presence down to 9:00 worked wonders. My treble knob is at 2:00, and now that I'm clean boosting channel 3 with a fulltone OCD I have also reduced the gain to 2:00. Thanks!
