Ive got a chance to own one or the other...Im not really concerned about the "collectibility" of one or the other,,,just TONE...i have them both now, hooked up to a lehle a/b pedal.....w/ new tubes in each, theyre soooo close...clean ch. in coli. may be a bit chimier, but the red seems to have a more aggressive lead voice...oh..boy,,,which one? whats your experiences w/ either?........

Never played a coli, but i imagine that thing is stupid loud. If collectability isnt an issue, id go red stripe. But thats just me

Well, if your after the collectablility value, then the Coli..*but*, if you don't care about that and your looking for playability, then I would much rather have the regular red stripe Mark III. The Coli is so loud that really getting those tubes to work overtime takes some serious volume which is so loud its ridiculous. I'm sure alot of people would tell you to "just crank it" but, seriously..you got to be real... and remember that getting that Coli to do its job becomes much too loud for most band or gigging situations.

Yes I do own a blue stripe coli...I am in a situation where i can turn up, thats not a problem.. but to my ears, im hearing a more aggressive and a little more raw tone coming out of the red stripe III...Does anyone know if boogie ever made red and green stripe coli's?...all I ever seem to see is blue's...If there is, I may let the blue stripe coli go, in search or a red or green..

Do both amps have the exact same preamp tubes? I have never seen a green stripe Series 300 model, but I once owned a red stripe Coliseum and the very same blue stripe that you have now. To me, the Coliseum was more about dynamics than volume. It takes 10x the wattage to double the dB. 8)

I retubed both of them w/ stock mesa tubes...could only find yellow dot 6l6's locally..but i'll tell ya something that happened today in the studio...I got a chance to crank up both heads to serious levels, and the coli started to really come to life..it eventually buried the red III...and was tighter in the bottom end and got more aggressive than the red III(go figure).....yes, that was yours i think....how do the red and blue stripe coli's compare to each other?....

+1 ..... No one can tell with their ears what one is louder. It is impossible for any one to do that in a blind test.

I did not own them both at the same time, so any comments about a comparison would be speculation on my part. The 150 watters will slap you in the face if you get heavy with your pick attack in the clean channel, I can say with conviction.

man, i wish i could play a red and blue stripe coli. at the same time :D ...I am just absolutely loving the mk IIIs all over again!...I think i'll keep my eyes pealed for a red coli...I see that non-coli-red stripe mk IIIs are all over the place: ebay, craigs list, rig talk, etc.....well, ive found that at least for now, that when the coli and red mk III are turned down, the red is a little more useable, however, Im in a band situation where i can turn my amps up live and get em workin hard..(thank god for an understandable soundman)...I do see where the coli is more about dynamics, then just outright volume....

I also loked at a mk III head today that has no stripe,is very mint, has a "red" R under the power cable input(indicating the r-2 mod), and its serial # is:24428...that seems like a very late number to be a no stripe????? the underside chassis has a date in green marker that says either: 2/89 or 2/84...its a messy writing,so im not sure which it is...any help on this one?......

I thought the "R" under the power cable indicates the reverb mod. That does sound late for a no stripe. (I have a green stripe with a similar S/N). Are you sure there is no green stripe that has worn off? What kind of transformer does it have?

Littleb-
Your pretty lucky! Man, that's pretty hard to come by these days, especially when out on the road and not having a sound guy with you. I did a full on national the end of last year and I was losing my mind trying to push amp date to date, gig to gig. Good for you my friend, that's excellent.

Thanks you all! You guys have been such a great help!...Its nice to hear from all the Mk series fans out there!...Im not sur if can get a pic of that (24428) mk III- its in a store....I mustve read the boogie files post a million times, about the diff.in the power section on the green stripes...Has anyone had any hands on experience in a/bing the red stripe against the green?.....
