Actually you can do it - but unless you choose the tubes very carefully it probably won't sound very good. If you leave the amp set to 6L6, all that will happen is that the EL34s will be biased effectively off at idle, way into crossover distortion. No harm will occur though.
But, if you were to find a pair of very hot-running EL34s, it might work OK - or a pair of very cold-running 6L6s, with the amp set to EL34. It gets easier if you only use the Tube Rectifier mode, and easier still if you use Spongy since that normally biases the 6L6s too cold anyway, so running in that mode with the amp set to EL34 can be safe, with many 6L6s... but I would make certain to check it.
It's really just a matter of finding out what the bias current for a particular set of tubes is in the various modes.
