That is an interesting question. IMHO that depends on who the JJ distributor was. If it was groove tubes selected for mesa range or if it was selected by a distributor/dealer to fall within the Mesa bias range, than it would be workable. I have paired up tubes with similar current draw from different manufacturers in one of my amps, and the qualities of both tube types came through. For instance, I ran a very bright 6v6 in one of my amps for poops and giggles having bias test jacks for each tube socket (Yay Siegmund!) along with another one that had a big bottom and the mix had a big bottom and a screaming top. But if one of the tubes is well used and the other is new then I'd definitely go with fishy's advice fo sho. Pimp your Mesa amp out tubularly and it will give back huge.
