I have a Mesa C90 and EV12L from an old 2x12 cabinet that I sold (buyer only wanted the cabinet, not the speakers), and I'm going to build 1x12 cabs for each. From everything I've read, the EV/Thiele is a no-brainer, but there seems to be nothing definitive about the C90, since the EV Thiele box isn't really a one-size-fits-all design.

I see that Mesa is selling in both the EV Thiele and a 3/4 back cabs with the C90. I'm wondering if any of you would share any experience or opinions of these designs. I'm trying to decide between them, or if a closed-back would be an even better match (or not) for that particular speaker.

Thanks!

I have a stock widebody thiele, Front ported Mesa cab that is awesome. It has the c 90 in it. This is the extention cab that is recomended by Mesa for the MKV combo. Just for ha ha's I unpluged the internal speaker in the combo, just to see what the cab would sound like alone. I was amazed. Big lush and full. As a matter of fact I find it difficult to leave it home for smaller gigs because the pair (combo and cab) sound so good together. You have the best of both worlds. open back for good stage sound and the bottom end push of the closed back cab. Even though it's only 2 12's it sounds MUCH BIGGER. Nice minimaxi stack....Hope that helps.

So, if I was going to use both my C90 and EV together (probably will), it sounds like you'd recommend having one with an open back and the other in a Thiele, rather than both in Thieles. Is that right?

Thanks!

Yup Thats the way I prefer my cabs or the sound just blows right past you. at least with one open back you get that nice swirling sound around you on stage.

Close back + theile, open back + theile, or close back + open back. Just depends what you need.

I think a theile works great with most guitar speakers. When you look at a frequency response diagram, you see that the frequency response of one guitar speaker really doesn't deviate particularly much from any other.
