I own a Mark III Blue stripe combo and it currently has 200watt black shawdow EV speaker. I play an Epiphone Les Paul Custom Midnight with EMG-81s. I'm thinking about getting a mesa thiele 1x12 cab but I have some questions before I buy:

  • If I get the thiele 1x12 cab, do I just plug the internal and the cab to the each of the the 4ohm jacks on the back?

  • What can I expect with this cab and my internal speaker running together in this set up?

  • The guy that is selling it is asking for $300 and it's in very good condition. Can you recommend a similar sounding cab or better 1x12 cab that sells for a better price than that?

Thanks in advanced,

Juan

Plug each 8ohm speaker into one of the 4ohm jacks.

Yes, A Thiele sounds great with a combo. I have a Mark IV EVM combo and a homemade Thiele-style cab with a Mojotone BV-30 in it. A Thiele cab adds a lot of depth and bass to the combo.

$300 is a very reasonable price for one it good shape. I don't think there is much out there that will compare for the price. Boogafunk and a few others make Thiele-type cabs but they will probably exceed $300. Even a DIY cab will set you back $225 or more for the parts & materials.

If the Thiele has the C-90 Boogie Celestion, I'd switch speakers, putting the EV in the Thiele. Try 'em both ways, YMMV. :D

IIRC, the specs for Mesa Thiele cabinets were designed around the EVM 12-L. So, at least in theory, that's the "best" speaker for that design. New Mesa Thiele's have C-90's. I don't know which one "sounds" better.

Also, many here have commented that a C90-loaded combo and an EVM-loaded Thiele deliver the best of both worlds. FWIW.

True, my setup is backwards from the norm. :D

I originally planned to put the EV speaker in the Thiele and the (Celestion-like) Mojo in the combo, but I was really surprised when I tried it the other way.

Don't take our advice. Experiment and go with what sounds good to you.
