i would like to know if the mark v can do the "master of puppets" tone as well as the mark iv.yeah, scooped eq and all.i had to sell my old mark iv a few years ago and have yet to find its match and am looking at the new mark v.so far it sounds pretty good and i like the improvements to the second channel (more gain) but,its channel 3 i worried about.

Dude,
The mark 5 has a mark 2c + Circuit in it - the amp that Metallica used on all their albums after the first, when his marshall was stolen - up to, and including the black album - best tone ever! and yes, there is even a tone of it on youtube with a guy doing battery.

You mean after the second album. Metallica did not use any Mesa amps on Ride The Lightning, that album was a ProCo Rat distortion into a Marshall head.

i remember i could nail that puppets tone on channel three.now channel two was alittle week for me so i would run a tube screamer in front of it and it would do for an older 80"s vibe.the mark v sound like channel two really rocks now...

Yes, you're right that a Mark IV was used but I believe they still used the IIc+ as well.

It was modded marshalls and dual recs / triaxis's

you may be right.

However not that the internet is a reliable resource for anything, but every resource I found showed they used the Mark IV (preamp section) through a Marshall power amp section and that the dual rec wasn't used till the next album.

Some of the resources also stated that they used the 2C+ preamp section through the Marshall power amp as well on the earlier albums.

Of course I don't take any of it as gospel.

well i looking for the old puppets tone which i could get with a mark iv.my question is can the new mark v achieve that tone?

There were no dual recs on the black album whatsoever. In fact, there weren't even Dual Recs used on Load according to the sound crew.

As for the modded marshalls, they were only for the highs on the album.

According to an interview, the 2C+ is somewhere in the mix on every album after RTL.

To all,
I dont know that i would kick my Mark 4 to the curb just yet. Ive been using the MK 4 live for a few years.
Of course like most others I feel Channel 2 is the weak point in this amp and in my case the hotter the humbucker the better
channel 2 sounds. Never had a problem with the MK 4 at all.

Now on to the MK V , channel 1 has a lot of usable options goes from clean to tight crunch and all points in between.
Channel 2 is also great until you get to the mark 1 modes just a ton of low end mud which i feel is useless. Yes you can eq
the low end and clean it up, but why shuold you have to do that ? Channel 3 the mk 2c is wonerful x 10 I love it.

Now for the part that relly offends my wallet. The MK V pops spits and makes loud staic noises when powering up and I paid 2 grand for this. So mesa says replace the power tubes one by one until you find a bad tube. ( why should i have to do that?)

I replaced all 4 tube with the ones from my MK 4 an now Chnnel 3 on the MK V make noise all of the time.

Well I live in rural fla and the closest repir shop is 200 miles away. I guess this one missed the hammer test and arent all of mesa tube supposed to be tested?
Well the MK V is on stage where I play and we will see how it does in a live setting.

Just wait for the Mark VB. You know its comming.

bottle rocket, so channel two does have more "balls" on the mark v ,and channel three is unchanged then right?

The Mark V channel 2 can go from a light clip to full sustain , I wouldnt say that the 3 channel is the same as the mark IV.
You have more options on the mark v and each of the settings are high gain. I love the mkIIc on channel 3.

I will be using the mkV live tomorrow nite and I am very anxious to see how it prefoms.
