Hey guys,

I just got a mini rectifier (killer amp!) and am using my Mesa 1x12 extension cabinet that is normally connected to my Mark V combo. My question is, I'm thinking about getting the Mesa 2x12 Rectifier Horizontal cabinet and was wondering if I could stack them all up as space is tight (e.g. Mark V on top of 1x12 mesa extension cab on top of 2x12)? That Mark V is pretty heavy and I can't seem to find just what the weight limits are for staking. BTW, do you guys like the 2x12 Rectifier horizontal for a mini Rectifier (I'd probably use it for my Mark V too).

Thanks!

Hi bcdon,

You and I must share similar amp preferences as I own a MkV Combo, Mini Recto, 212 Horizontal Recto Cab, and today my new Widebody 112 Thiele Cab arrived at my doorstep!
I spent the entire day playing my MkV combo along with the Widebody Extension Cab, and am VERY pleased with the results!

Anyway......regarding your questions:

1). I don't know the weight limitations of the 212 cab, however, I have stacked my MkV Combo (about 70 pounds) on top of it without any issues. What you are thinking about doing would add another 35 pounds for the 112 extension cab, and another 12 pounds for the Mini Recto (assuming you would be placing that on top of your MkV combo). That would be more weight on the 212 than if you had a 412 cab stacked on top of it....which I have never seen done, but that is not to say it couldn't handle all of that weight. I wouldn't do it, but that is just me. My advise.....call Mesa.
2). Yes, I love the sound of my Mini through the 212 recto cab! I will also be exploring the possibilities using my Mini through my new Widebody 112 extension cab. Hopefully, it will sound great as well for an easier grab and go with the Mini for some applications.
3). I have played my MkV combo through the 212 recto cab (with the combo speaker disconnected), and it sounded very good, but it was "brighter" than what I had grown accustomed to while just using the combo speaker. Not a problem......I simply just turned down the treble and/or presence knobs to taste. The bass was more prevalent as well through the 212 which is a good thing and is what I expected would be the case.

I hope this helps and good luck!!

Howdy MBJunkie,

Happy New Cab Day!! Thanks a lot for your advise, I think I'll call Mesa just to confirm.... at worst I'll move stuff around and make it fit! :)

I really like the Mark V combo paired with the Thiele Cab. When I got the mini Recto I thought I could deal with just stealing the Thiele from my combo but I miss the presence that the two speakers give.

I am also really digging the mini Rectifier... it's such a fun ballsy amp and complements the Mark V so well.

Thanks again and enjoy your new setup! \m/

Hey Guys

I have a Mark v combo. I wanted to get a bigger sound so I bought a 2x12 horizontal recto cab.

1. Is it safe to put combo on top of 2x12 cab?
2. Ive tried both ways. Combo speaker connected and disconnected...still unsure. any thoughts or suggestions thanks

Mesa cabs are built from 3/4" Baltic Birch plywood. They can handle a LOT of weight, though the tolex my get some marks in it from the rubber feet of the unit sitting on top of it. I regularly stack a Mark V head and a 3/4 back 2x12 on top of my Recto 2x12, no problems at all.

Thanks....any opinion on using my mark v combo with the recto 2x12 cab....It seems really unorthodox.....maybe I should both and buy a head/4x12 cab ...Im confused...I have 30 days to return 2x12 recto cab to Guitar center

bcdon....First of all Thanks, and YES, I am loving my new widebody thiele cab paired with my V combo!! I will be trying my Mini Rec through the thiele cab as well, but not tonight.....my fingers are spent!! Honestly, I doubt that I will prefer the 112 thiele cab for my Mini over the 212 recto cab because the Mini Rec sounds FANTASTIC while playing through the 212. I am sure you will love it as well!

BCR20....I purchased my V combo prior to owning my 212 recto cab. I haved loved my combo stand alone from day one.....and still do, but I did opt for the thiele extension cab as mentioned above. Did I absolutely need it??? No, but I am glad that I have added it to use with my V combo. I purchased my 212 horizontal recto cab when I purchased my Mini Recto a couple of months ago because it sounded so good to me in the store.
Upon bringing the 212 recto cab home, I had to experiment by playing my V combo through it. I opted to disconnect the internal combo speaker to get a feel for how the 212 cab would sound as if I had a MkV head. It really sounded great, but I had to make some tweaks to my tone settings to compensate for the difference in tones. I haven't gotten around to playing my V combo with the internal speaker connected along with the 212 yet, but that day will happen at some point. I will say this.......there are a LOT of people on this forum that use the 212 recto cab (or 412) along with their MkV head and love it!! I am one of the few people that actually like the sounds of the C90 speaker that is included in the combo. I also like the "airiness" of the sound offered in the combo by it being open back. However, I do not play metal at all. For those that do.....the closed back rectifier cabs are likely the better choice. However, the closed back rectifier cabs sound very good for many other styles of music as well. Personally, I like the sounds from my V as a stand alone combo amp, paired with my new extension cab, and using it as a "head" playing through my 212 rectifier cab.

You just need to experiment on your own and decide what works best for you. BTW....the 212 cab can easily handle the weight of the V combo on top of it. Mine didn't cave in! :D

Best of luck to you whatever you decide BCR20!!

I kind of like the variation in speakers with the c90 and v30s....So far I like running the combo speaker along with the 2x12. I guess I really have several options.....running the 2x12 alone, running the combo alone or both together

My MarkV is the head version, and I have the Recto 2x12, a 3/4 back 2x12 (C90s), a closed-back 1x12 (C90) and an open back 1x12 (C90). Each of them sounds different, and the various combinations add even more choices.

I tend to go through phases where I'll latch onto one particular flavor for a while, then I'll move to something else. Having these options available prevents me from buying additional amps, so that works out well for me. Right now the head is sitting on the Recto 2x12, with just a TimeFactor in the loop and a Nova Drive in front of it. I'm sure that it'll change within the next week, though.

I also bounce back and forth between 6L6s and EL34s.

Yes indeed SteveO......having several options is always a good thing!!

BCR20......I wouldn't return the 212 recto cab if I were in your shoes either.
Experiment and enjoy the different tonal flavors that are offered by using different cab/speaker combinations with your V.

FWIW I use my Mark V combo on top a lonestar 4-10 cabinet(matching wine taurus). I use the combo speaker too. I used this setup at a small gig this weekend and it sounded great. Very open and airy on the clean and mid gain channels. THe high gain also sounds good. I am not a metal guy either but I do use high gain for some stuff but my perspective wont be as a metal dudes. I was able to tighten up the high gain by lowering the presence to 9. This seems to match my style well although I haven't got to use it in a full band setup yet. I will post my results when I do.

I also have a RK 412 to run with the V. The notes seem to be a little bigger on this one. At loud volumes it has an openess and a boxyness both to it. I think the closed back side doesn't have enough air space for loud volumes hence the boxyness. Hope this wasn't confusing :D

I am curious, does the 212 recto cab have a boxy sound at high volumes with clean settings?

Tonight, I finally got around to playing my Mini Recto through my new 112 widebody, front ported, closed back thiele cab with C90 speaker, and all that I can say is WOW am I impressed! Great focused sound definition paired with the Mini Rec in all modes!!

Honestly, I think that I prefer the sound of my Mini Recto paired with my widebody 112 more than when pairing my Mini with the 212 Recto Cab....which is saying a LOT.

Anyway, I am also loving my new 112 widebody thiele extension cab paired with my MkV combo! This extension cab is a good choice with the MkV, Mini Recto and probably many other amps IMO!!

Definitely check out the 112 widebody thiele cab in person if you can. I had to order mine sight unseen, but am very pleased with the results of this cab with my MkV and Mini Recto!!

I'm thinking about getting the Mesa 2x12 Rectifier Horizontal cabinet and was wondering if I could stack them all up as space is tight (e.g. Mark V on top of 1x12 mesa extension cab on top of 2x12)? That Mark V is pretty heavy and I can't seem to find just what the weight limits are for staking.

It holds at least this much... :)

Every Mesa cabinet is built like a brick sh**house. You could stack elephants on them. As long as the floor is stable, stack to your heart's content. I even stack my vert 2x12s on each other. You won't break 'em...unless you go all Pete Townsend on them.

Great setup! I did end up getting a 2x12 and you are right, that thing is built like a tank.

Is that an outdoor stage in front of your house or the top of a truck bed? Very cool, either way! \m/
