Is it ok to use a normal (not balanced) 12ax7 preamp tube in the V5, or is this something that will cause problems?

It would not be a problem. We have been using whatever 12AX7 in the
PI since the dawn of time. Only since these new matched triodes came out from these propeller heads charging $ 30.00 for a mathched triode have we questioned the practice. I have plenty of gain matched triodes and I cannot tell a **** bit of difference. Then again, I am not Eric johnson. God forbid your V1A triode is at a gain of 91 and your V1B is at 97. Big deal. they can scope the output section from here to eternity and I could care less. I am more apt to just find a brand of tube that sounds good. I use either NOS RFT's or the GT 12AX7M's. i like the M's in the V1 and V5. A niced balanced tube for both positions. In the V-5 I find the M has a balanced bottom end.
