Thanks for the info.

Hmm. That probably explains the hum I'm getting from my TC Electonics effects unit. I called TCE support and they attributed my problem to grounding and reccomend using balanced cables. If the loop is unbalanced, I expect that would not help. Is there any easy workaround to get a balanced connection?

unbalanced are just the regular cables right? thats all i use on my effects loop, my normal studio 1 cables with the amphenol ends...works fine...

speaker cables from head / cab are supposed to be unbalanced speaker cables too, right? so a balanced cable will never just be a regular 1/4' ?

Unbalanced = a 2 wire connection such as a standard guitar cable or speaker cable.

Balanced = a 3 wire cable such as an XLR "mic cable" or a "stereo" instrument cable with a tip/ring/shaft

Thanks for the tip. That would work. However, it's a pricey solution to fix a cheap effects box. I'm going to exchange this unit and see if my luck improves. If not, I will try a different effects processor all together.
