Hey guys. tried a search, couldnt find anything. Just got my Mark III purple stripe yesterday. Its in pretty good shape. But it sounds dull and ******. The tubes are very dirty and old looking. Gonna buy a set of tubes.

Whats recommended for the Mark IIIs?

In my rectos and stiletto I always ran...

Tung Sol in V1
JJ high gain in V2 V3
Chinese C8,C9 in V4
Sovtek LPS in V5

and JJ or SED power tubes.

Did I answer my own question?

That is a very good combination there. I really like using the Sovtec LPS in the phase inverter position and the tungsol in V1 is also my fav. You should be able to get a very good variety of tones.

So how much gain are these amps suposed to have? I know its not a recto, but so far I need a boost to get any kind of hard rock/ metal tone out of the amp. All the clips I heard had tons of gain. Maybe they were boosted?

it should have plenty of gain, make sure your rhythm control isn't pulled out. Pull everything else.
Volume and treble at about 7
Bass around 3
Middle 3-4
Lead drive about 8.
use the GEQ in increase the bass while leaving the bass control low 2-3 tops

That's a good starting point.

I love the combination of the Mesa 6L6s on the inside and the Tesla 34s on the outsides. That's the best combination to me that really shows that sweet but gritty tone.

All the Best,

Should have more gain than a Recto, but it is more focused and compressed/lead friendly as opposed to grinding and fuzzy. And be careful pushing in "Pull Lead" with your face in front of the amp. I forgot that my master volume was on 4 and I swear it cracked my fillings.
