I think MrMarkIII and I have had this argument before but I find that the Mark III isn't a big "return on investment" for preamp tubes except for the PI where you just want a quality low-noise tube. Then again *I* don't have any NOS Mullards lying around to roll. I have tried RFTs and RCA blackplates and the difference was really not worth my money (compared to in a Recto where the difference is HUGE.)

Power tubes, hellz yeah, especially the EL34s in a simulclass. You will not regret shelling out for good EL34s.

If you're looking for a big change, no, tubes won't do it. To me, it's the difference between cheap beer and expensive beer. Hey, it's still beer! :D
You'll get a bigger change with speakers. To say nothing of changing those ratty old strings that have been on your guitar for a year.

speakers and cab for sure. through a recto 4x12 a mark III is a modern rock machine but through EVMs there's a hi-fi quality that says 80s in a big way. if you like that, awesome, if not...

I really want to try a 4x12 with greenbacks but haven't had a chance yet.

The little changes add up.

i find that the new tung-sol's & an EV suit my MIII quite well.

ymmv

what's your favorite preamp tubes for the mark III?

Not gonna lie, I still think a Mark III through a 4x12 Marshall loaded with Celestion G12-75s is THE shiz.
