I'm putting together a small Pink Floyd/ David Gilmour rig and I want a small amp (head) with great cleans. I don't care much about the drive channel. I'll be using my pedals.

I would prefer a physically small amp like the ones below and no more than 35 watts.

Which one out of those three would you recommend? I want to stick with Mesa.

Express
Transatlantic TA
Lonestar Special

I'd look at the LS. Express cleans are nothing to write home about. Can't remember what the TA cleans are like, though if it's a VOX-ish amp as advertised, that might be a good thing.

Out of that list, the only amp I would exclude is the Lone Star. And contrary to what elvis said, I (and many others) think the Express amps have some pretty great cleans. I actually prefer the clean sound of my 5:50+ to my Fenders.

I would tend to lean towards the TA for that style of music.

Lonestar cleans are some of the best. If you wanted strictly a pedal platform, I'd go with the Lonestar Special out of those three choices. Also, the Deluxe Reverb Reissue is one of the absolute best pedal platforms. I used one for years until I got my Electra Dyne.

There is a HUGE differences in clean headroom and sound between EL84 and 6L6 tubes, i had the LSS and it was great with Telecastes and Stratocasters but not that great with Humbuckers, Sold it and switched to the Express 5:50+ and its a very different sound, bigger, fuller, rounder and far more headroom meaning you can turn it pretty dam load with a good clean sound and no breakup.

But i recently sold that amp too in order to give way to the Mark Mini, I'm in a situation where i get everything mic'ed even for band practice so going back to EL84 at 25 watts its a such a big deal, i'm now more incline to really more gain on the other channels that i felt its was lacking on the Express, so a Mark series is more in my territory.

Unfortunately non of the mesa Speakers will give you that Gilmour sound, the speaker is another key part in the signal chain.

Go to Gilmourish.com to learn everything there is to learn about achieving the Gilmour sound and the right tools to do so.
