Epic fail on the MOP tone though. I am in the IIC+ setting and I'm having a hell of a time dialing in the MOP tone.

Any setting suggestions from the Mark V owners out there?

Well... you're right about epic fail on the MOP tone :)

The tone itself is pretty good and the playing is nice. I don't have a nor have I ever seen/played one MKV so I can't comment on specific knob settings, but... I do know that for MOP, Metallica played VERY, VERY loud, treble quite low (like 3-4). They actually play quite a dry, stiff sound on that album, it's just layered so many ******' times it sounds huge.

Try running straight in, crank your channel and output to 10 (wear some earplugs or stand 50 feet away lol), set your treble to 4, bass to 0 or 0.5, mids at maybe 6ish, and the ol' V curve and see where that lands you.

Sounds good! Don't be afraid to do a super scoop with the graphic EQ though for that old school Metallica tone. Here's a clip from probably 5 years ago or so back when I had a Mark IV. I was able to get fairly close doing the classic V pattern and keeping the mid and bass knobs turned down really low. With some tweaking you should be able to nail it with the Mark V!

I always found that marshalls did way better for the MOP sound than any mesa I've ever used. The power was bone crushing on that album and I believe it was the height of their guitar sound. After that, the sound slowly degraded IMO.

Leper Messiah sounds like one of those tunes that he may have used a boogie on the front end of a marshall.

I have to say, as far as his live sound goes, the best sound I think they've had is when he was using Mp1's and triaxis with the 2:90s

The new JVM really pulls the MOP tone off very well with straight cabs.

That was actually quite good - what guitar/pickup combination did you use to get that?

I honestly think you should sell the Mark V while you can still get some money for it. Expect prices on them to drop, and expect IIC+ prices to climb. Grab a IIC+ while you can.

Good playing.

I have a mark IV and get very close to their sound. Your sound is good but need thickening up and scooping a touch I would say.

I run Gain and Drive around 8. Bass and mids at 1ish. Treble at 7 or so.

Its all about the EQ with the mark IV though. I run a very scooped EQ 'V' with the 2nd and 4th slider scooped a touch aswell to get the thickness required. Bass slider near the top and treble slider between middel and top line.

Mid gain, Triode, Class A with all 6l6's.

Keep trying and dont give up, part of the fun!

I posted my close Quad settings under Metallica tones.

These should work on the IV too. Just make sure the owerall master is about 7 otherwise it ain't going to sound right.

Dammit, beat me to it. The tone seems like it's there, it's just not nearly loud enough to be saturated. To my ears.

ON the MOP album the 750 slider was almost always just above the bottom line and the rest usually hovered above center. Trebble was usually higher than 7 1/2. This is according to the recording notes that Flemming took durring recording.
