I have several rigs that I play out of, depending on the venue and mood. I absolutely love my Roadster, along with the few other Mesas I own (Rectoverb 50, Express 5:25). I also have a rack rig that is pretty awesome, albeit small. That said, I have been using the rack quite frequently lately, and I am thinking of upgrading the preamp from the old H&K Access to a Mesa of sorts (Studio Pre or Triaxis) Doing so, means I have to probably sell the Roadster to offset the cost. So, I am seeking opinions to go along with my research into this. What do you guys think? Does anyone have a Roadster and rack gear, that prefer the rack? Before you suggest it, yes, I do use the other rack gear with the Roadster live. I am trying to streamline / downsize my haul. Thanks

I don't have rack gear, but I've had to downsize before. What I always keep in mind is this: if I end up desiring what I've sold, the used market will provide it at roughly the same cost as what I sold it.

What modes are you using? The newer Triaxis and the Pre are more about the Mark Series than anything Recto. If that isn't a concern, I suppose the only other question is whether the Roadster has something that none of the other amps will provide?

Good point about repurchasing re-desired equipment. From what I read, the Triaxis is all about the sounds of the Mark series, which would be good as far as I am concerned. I like the Recto sound, but can be just as happy with Mark tone as well. I'm not quite ready to jump into this as yet, because the current pre amp I do have seems pretty feature laden and is in good shape. I'm just not sure how long it will last and thought to look for something a bit more modern. It is tube driven, has three different "voices" I guess you could call them - clean, tube 1 and tube 2 (1 is supposed to be "American type drive" and 2 is British style drive); it is controlled by midi, you can have 128 different presets, there are three, switchable effects loops, and several different output options. All of the eq, drive and volume controls are right on the front for direct adjustment. It is very intuitive.

H&K make good stuff. Their Meister series is awesome and that Pre sounds awesome.

I look at my instruments, amps, effects, etc., as tools. In the quest for sounds and function, we guitarists can get pretty hung up on a number of things that we think we need. This goes both ways, whether downsizing or G.A.S.. We drink the marketing Kool-Aid and magazine ads disguised as gear reviews, even though most things are only slightly different than another model. Variety is cool, but I think it can be taken too far. I struggle with this, since I can't absorb the cost of major purchases without a lot of planning.

Very good points, and you have made me realize this is probably just a case of GAS. I already have probably more gear than I (or anyone) really needs - just get the notion from time to time that something different may be better.

I wasn't trying to convince you to not do it. If you can haul less and be happy with the trade, that's cool. I just think I'd miss a Roadster. :)

I didn't take it that way, I just thought you made some valid points; and upon further thought, it really is just a phase I go through every so often. I felt I was very fortunate in being able to get the Roadster in the first place. Now, after a while, it seems I want something else. On the other hand, I really don't need it, but can find a suitable use for a Triaxis or other higher end preamp, which then allows me to use the rack more frequently (at least for now). Sometimes, I think I would be better off just picking what I think is my best gear/rig and then sell the rest. The problem is, I would just end up buying it all back somewhere down the road...

As a fellow Roadster owner, my advice is to keep the Roadster! Sell other things but keep the Roadster. Or, sell the Roadster at a very low price to Given To Fly. There is nothing wrong with owning two of them.

LOL.

I'm having a similar phase. I'm losing function in my limbs from illness and it affects my cognition and memory on a regular basis. It took 3 months to find a simple set of techniques that work with rheumatoid arthritis and pain. Keeping a good, light setup on my guitars is a whole other thing, but I can't even grip strings on days like today. I'm thinking I should sell most of my stuff, mothball the Recto, and get a small amp so my neighbors don't have to hear me struggle. The Orange OR15 caught my eye. I can't do highly technical stuff anymore; so a straight ahead, single channel amp with a versatile, single guitar (Ibanez Artist or a modded SG), is on my radar. I'm permanently screwed, but if I regain some health, I'll still have the Recto to, literally, shake the house and scare the wild animals off of my property.

To keep the creativity going, I think I should get a midi keyboard controller and make some brain warping electronic music with some acid rock sounds in it with my FL Studio. Perhaps I'll go Jeff Healey with a slide/ebow/various metal gadgets. At the same time, I'm trying to finish some analyses of the 3 Channel schematic and practical uses to give examples to noobie amp builders, enthusiasts, and people who need help with all the bells and whistles on the darn thing, but it's sometimes difficult to test the practical parts.

I'm not saying this shtuff for sympathy or anything. This is sometimes how it goes in life. I'm trying to throw the lemons back and nail life square in the nuts..... maybe I'll use a potato launcher to do it.

Sorry to hear of your ailment, AFU. It would really suck to lose the ability to play / enjoy any hobby, job, whatever it is that gives a person some enjoyment. At least you do have a few ideas to continue to create music. I have a suggestion for you. In your quest to keep the creativity going, don't overlook the kazoo. It is an instrument that sems to have fallen by the wayside (especially given all the notoriety the cowbell has gotten over the years); but I'm going to make an early prediction of a comeback in the not too distant future. Starting early COULD launch you as a pioneer - especially if mixed with electronica music.

Afu - you have added SO Much great information to this site that I would like to help you out and offer up a few options for you - cheap. Specifically your request for a different guitar and amp. Send me a PM if you would like to discuss.

Take care
Chris

If the kazoo was good enough for Hendrix on Crosstown traffic, who am I to deny it a try. :)

Not sure if you have a dry sense of humor, though......

The kazoo is the first thing I think of when I hear that song. It's too bad it never really caught on.

Humor? Dry...very dry
