Well the new JVM head has MIDI control :).

Personally, I think the preamp in the JVM blows away the sound of the JMP-1. I owned the JMP-1 for many years, and while it had classic Marshall rock tones, the cleans were VERY muddy. The new JVM has real high-headroom clean.

Also, it's got lower noise on the dirty channels than any Marshall I've ever played.

jmp-1 has been discontinued due to the whole issue with lead based solder.

along with a lot of older rack gear, want one, buy used.

When were JMP-1's first introduced? What Marshall pre-amp would have likely been in use in 1972?

Maybe the prices will go down on used ones now. I remember a time when you could pick a JMP-1 up for under $350 easy. Back when they went for $1,000 new. Then over night Marshall increased their prices on everything and new JMP-1's were $1,400. Thus the cost raised in the used market and $450 is considered a steal. :?

Great preamps. Regret selling mine.

The JMP-1 was introduced in the mid90's. It replaced the feeble 9001 preamp. The 9001 had actual knobs and had no presets. It was more of an analog type thing. The JMP-1 really was cutting edge at the time that it was introduced with its midi capability and use of presets. Granted there were nicer sounding preamps out there but the JMP-1 most closely approximated the Marshall tones that most wanted.

A Marshall preamp in 1972? It would have likely been the front end of whatever amp that the person was playing through. These rack preamps didn't surface until much later.

That is funny. I remember getting one in '97 for $250 thinking it was expensive. I had seen them going for about $200. That was when the 2 ch Dual Rec was just dominating the modern high gain heavy amp dept.

BTW, http://www.rig-talk.com has a music theory section.

HELL YES!!!

I've asked for this on here and nothing. this is badass! music theory and technique are more important than equipment (witness Dimebag).

I completely agree!!! Don't forget to mention Randy Rhoads- one of the worst guitar tones, but such an amazing player/composer it doesn't matter!!!

I have had a JMP-1 for many years, i think i paid around $350 for it when i got it. I just picked up a voodoo modded one for $480 shipped, still A/B'ing them, will give review later.

is that true? can't find it online (out of production they all say). has the JMP-1 been replaced?

The JMP-1 is no longer in production. We have not heard any confirmed news of a replacement.

Hope it helps
