Hey there tone wizards.

Just dropped in to say hi and that I'm thinkng of getting myself the HD147 and cab from line6.

My gear history is : Marshall jmp-1 and el 100 x2 poweramp, Trace elliot supertramp, peavey special, it was sorta like bandit on steroids Mesa Boogie Dual Rectumfrier with side armoured cab,line6 vettall combo which sucks, Mesa boogie f50 and a fender something 1x12 combo. So what do you think? I'm kinda lost gearwise but find the HD147 covering most of my needs.

All feedback is appreciated.

I think you'll find most here are more about what is best for you. Just don't Mesa bash here and you'll be fine. The majority of us here play Mesa and tube but there are those that still have their digital "stuff". I don't see anything wrong with digital if it is getting you where you want to go. Personally, I would rather see someone playing and enjoying themself than not playing at all.

The main problem with Line 6 and other modelling amps is the speakers, IMHO. You cannot get a closed-back cabinet to perfectly emulate open back or vice versa, so the modelling amp makes compromises. You also miss the compression and breakup characteristics of real power tubes to some extent.

Line 6 tries to compromise by using a speaker with a relatively flat response and then appying EQ to emuluate open or closed back. The result is that most people complain that the Rectifier and Marshall sounds just don't come close to the real thing.

Running a POD PRO into a PA system or full-range keyboard amp should, at least in theory, give the best results.

Try the Vox modelling amps while you are at it. These seem to do better at capturing power tube dynamics than Line 6, at least by some accounts.

You can't beat using several amps at once for versatility, even though your bank account and back will suffer.

Digital has its purposes. I use midi devices to channel switch my amp and call up effects presets. However, that amp is all tube!

Thank you guys

For being so openminded about the matter. My dream set up is the mark IV wide head with a mesa boogie 4 x 12 cab. And for that reason you'll never catch me bashing the boogies. But I live in Iceland and the only mesa supplier in the country is not stocked with the mark series, it's a special order. The HD 147 half stack I'm currently trying out has a 4 x12 closed back cab and sounds really nice but it will never be a mark IV, and on that note it's only half priced compared to the mark.

Maby someday the wife will have more understanding...........

Cheers

I like all the line 6 stuff. I played the vetta and the hd147 alot before settling on tubes. Im a big fan of that ultra modern Nine inch Nails highly effected sound.

My only issues was the cabs i tried. You have to go with a line 6 cab or even a mesa over sized. The Marshalls tried flubbed out badly, they where terrible. I ended up with Mesa after plugging in and feeling the umph and sparkle.

Since we've moved to a IEM system its POD's directly into the board, no amps on stage. FOH sounds much better and we carry far less gear :)

That said I really miss my tube amps.

I really like the warmth and dynamics of a tube amp. That's what got me into Mesas and tube amps in the first place. I just bought another tube amp to see if I'll take to it or not. That being said, I came from modelling amps and have some digital effects. So there's room for both worlds.

From what I've read since I've been on this site, aside from some good humored ribbing now and then, there's room for everyone and folks are generally pretty supportive and helpful on this site. Overall, it's a collective of very knowledgeable, talented, and great group of musicians.
