from those who own both or have played them both, preferably side by side. Is there a noticeable difference between the lead channel on versions A and B? Seriously.

Yes, but only if you are playing a good sounding guitar WITHOUT the following: Active pickups, the amp gain jacked waaaaaay up, and the graphic EQ scooped all to Hell. The EVM -12L speaker will also help you to hear the tone difference, as the highs are clearer than most Celestion speakers. This is where the A version sounded a little brighter to my ears in the Lead channel. 8)

Could they be set to sound identical is what im trying to find out. Yes B has more gain, but how are you quantifying this? More gain at the same setting on both amps? Just really curious. I've read that the A is voiced more like the IIC+. I have played a Mrk IV B and a IIC+ side by side and there is a big difference between amps. Thats why Im inquiring into the tru sound diff between the A and B Mrk IVs.

Thanks for your input!

I've owned both although not at the same time. They might have slight differences but not enough to matter. If shopping for a IV, I don't think A vs. B would be a large factor for me. Honestly, the speaker/cab choice will have more impact on the sound that A vs. B.

The IVB had a stereo effects loop, and Simul-Satellite compatibility. The IVA had two mono/serial effects loops. Plus the other things that everyone else said.

Thinking about the A and B IVs that I've played, perhaps the A is a little toppier, but I think the bottom line is that the tone controls are so powerful on that amp that you could compensate for any tone difference very easily (and you'd only be able to hear it side-by-side, same guitar, same settings).
