I talked to a guy at Mesa and he said they have drawn up the preliminary outline of a new Triaxis but haven't started prototyping it even yet. It sounds like it's going to happen.. and I couldn't be more excited! Mind you, I love my Triaxis.

It has to happen! The TriAxis is basically the only "dated" piece of gear they have in their current amp line. Even though the 2:90 is just as old, same goes for the 20/20, they don't "look" dated nor are the features, plus any new poweramp introduced has followed the exactly same design, so I don't see them discontinuing any of them. But much can be improved in the TriAxis! And if they really do hold off the Mark 5 until January '09, like someone mentioned over at the Petrucci Forum, they'd better introduce the new TriAxis along with that one as well!

well I've just sold my Mark IV combo and have a JMP-1 and rivera s120 head.

interested in the triaxis as it seems pretty flexible but not sure exactly what preamp voicings it has. according to the mesa web page on it, it's confusing.

is it Mark I, IIC+, III, IV and recto?

Yes and no. It does have a Mark I, IIC+, and IV voicing. The Lead 2 RED Mode is subject to debate. It's been called a "Searing Mark III Lead" by some, and akin to a "High Gain/Classic/British Lead" by others. Oddly enough, the "High Gain British Lead" was also previously associated with Lead 1 RED prior to the Recto board. As it stands, I'd say it's somewhere in that souped up Mark III territory.

The Recto board is in the Version 2 Triaxis, and it no longer comes stock. So if you want that particular Version of Lead 1 RED, you'll need to buy used.

does the triaxis lose some "organic" feel/response? the JMP-1 has two 12AX7's (triaxis has 5) but is solid-stateish...

That's all subjective and everyone will tell you something different. I don't think the Triaxis modes sound exactly alike their counterparts, but they sound great. The amps they're based on gives you a great approximation of their sound.

And to your follow up question, yes you control the Triaxis modes and such via midi.

and do you basically switch the preamp voicings (or modes) via MIDI footcontroller?

It has 90 presets which you can program and switch between with a midi controller.

In a preset you program the voicing/mode, the settings for that mode and levels, etc., etc.

:)
