Been looking for some monitors for the band so I can hear my self over the boogie (Not easy!) rather than floor monitors I see a lot of bands using in ear stuff now, would it be feasible to use in ear monitoring for vocals whilst still using un mic'd guitars, drums etc??

cheers.

They actually work pretty good that way. They act as ear plugs protecting your hearing from the amps but you can still hear yourself as well. I tried just using regular ear plugs a couple times but then I feel tone-deaf to my singing. I have an in ear system from Carvin and it works awsome.

If you use typical ear-bud style in-ear monitors, like the ones bundled with a Shure system, for example, you'll hear more than enough bleed from the room to not have to mic your amp. But if you get custom molds made like the pros, most of these block so much external sound that you'll have to put a mic on a speaker and throw that in your monitor mix.

It takes a little bit to get used to the new way of hearing things, but it's ultimately way more precise, and safer for your hearing since everything can be at a lower volume.

do those in-ear monitors have protection for those sudden "pops" when someone mistakenly unplugs something?

huge kudos for mentioning saving your hearing, since one cannot recover it once hearing is lost.

Yes, that's the huge difference between in-ear monitors and just connecting your ear buds or headphones to a headphone mixer... circuitry to prevent fast spikes of signals that would otherwise damage your ears on a permanent basis.

We have a virtually-unused Shure PSM 600 system, including Shure earbuds, that we just put up for sale on ebay today. We purchased two units for a feature story on in-ear monitoring and don't need it. It has only been in the MusicPlayers.com testing studio, and is just sitting in the box, complete with rack ears, full docs, etc... so if any of you want a pro system at a great price, here you go. Sorry if this crossed spam boundaries -- I know it sort of belongs in the classifieds area, but since we've been talking about this topic...
