I don't know if it's just me, but this 2ch Triple gets HOT, even the front of the chassis is pretty warm to the touch. Would this be an effect of the head running on EL34's, or do these generally run hotter than the 3ch's?

EL-34 tubes do run hotter, and my Rectifiers in general usually do get hot to the touch after extended play. Sounds normal to me.

Ok, cool. Just wanted to be sure it wouldn't have any effect on the components inside since the chassis never got anywhere past lukewarm on my 3ch Dual I had before this. I got ahold of the 2ch triple a few days ago and it still amazes me how much better it sounds.

Sounds like a good idea. I might order some TAD 6L6 GC's to throw in, but have to double check and see if the head was biased for EL34's in the past.

Would you say it looks pretty stock, or were there some resistor changes?

EDIT: Checked this out, http://forum.grailtone.com/viewtopic.php?f=24&t=35849&start=0
No mods were done on the main board (R225 is intact with the right code visible in the 5th pic)

**** me, now the orange, clean channels have lost their gain and I tried changing out tubes with others (all postions) with no change. I think something is wrong with the V1 socket...

I think its time to go to the amp Doctor!

Tried the tube swap again. no luck. I think there is a loose lead somewhere in between V1 or the channel switch on the back of the amp. It was working fine earlier yesterday...

Outta ideas... any last efforts you guys can come up with? It did sound like a tube issue but that's crossed off the list now.

I had just picked this up on the 3rd... what a buzzkill

Ok, back to GC tomorrow... if they can't help me then time to find a tech ... nothing I have tried worked so far and I don't think it's something I can fix at home...

Yeah, the amp is with a tech now. There was an internal problem caused by the previous owner running mis-matched power tubes before I bought the head, that explains everything now. At least GC is going to cover the repair charges.

That's part of it, and the LDR's were sketchy and the relays went bad as well on all the channels. Switches were going as well. Everything else was in great shape. It's fixed now but I pick it up on Monday. :D
Crazy how it wasn't a 100% when I bought it and it still sounded good, can't wait to have it back.

Still waiting on the shop, they had to call Mesa for the replacement LDR's and optic switches :?: (the tech is replacing them all) At least Mesa is sending them the parts at no cost to them/me!
Hopefully I'll hear something this week... I'm really missing my triple right now... it's an unfillable void

Hope all is 100% when you get it back! I don't know what I would do without my triple! Thank god I live only an hour and a half away from Petaluma (Boogie headquarters)! It still amazes me that someone would spend the money on such a great amp and place mis-matched tubes in it. Kinda like having a corvette and putting those donut spare tires on it, sure it will run, but not for long...Should have the tech just do the loop mod too while it's there! Good luck!

PS JC, just read your gear at the bottom, you run almost the sme rig as mine, except I have Marshall cabinets....I run a Wylde wah, MExon OD808, Bass NS2, into my boogie, and have a G-Major in the loop. Nice, somewhat simple and very very effective rig! We played with Lynch Mob a few months back and I had his guitar tech checking my rig out during soundcheck, now thats always a good sign!

Have a great day!

I wondered about the previous owner as well, I was told he got banned from trading in used at GC because he traded in 2 other amps that bit the dust.
Thanks man, I hope to have her back soon in 100% shape!

Had a chance to check out your band and it rocks! You guys have a great sound going!
Take care.

I got the amp back yesterday and I sounds better than it did before the problems arose
The entire switching circuit had to be replaced, that's where the extra heat was coming from, those components burning out.

Now I really like my C90/V30 mix, and handed the 5150 my buddy lent me back to him as fast as I could.
Life is great once again :D
