could i get some advice on setting up my pedals in the correct order? should the echo go in my loop or in front ? thanks in advance

seymourstilletto,

Please do a basic search for that topic. I and others have posted repeatedly in great detail on exactly that question.

Ah, what the hell, I'm bored. Delay in the loop, along with any reverb or chorus. Volume pedals work great in the loop also. But this is not a law and the delay can go in front of the amp also. It will get stronger and weaker depending on your guitar vol, ch switching, other stomp boxes, etc. In the loop it will receive the signal more steady in vol and will echo with consistant echo volumes.

But, of course, you should try out your pedals in a variety of combinations and placements.

Do you want your distorted sound to have reverb, or do you want your reverb sound distorted? The first is closer with the reverb in the loop, the second you get from using the reverb before you plug your guitar in.

I like my phaser and chorus effects after the distortion as well. Most of the time, anyway. ;)

Boosts go in front of the amp, for the most part.

Don't put a tremolo in front of a compressor because the compressor will just "fix" the quiet part of the signal.

My rule of thumb: naturally occurring sounds (like reverbs and delays) go as far near the end of the chain as you can get them. Remember, a studio will always want you to play with a dry signal so they can add the reverb and delay afterwards.

And don't worry about asking questions that might have been brought up before - we've all done it. There are always some people who just say "do a search for it" but how is anyone to know what questions have already come up?

Good luck, and let us know what you decide on! ;)

Yes, experiment to find your best preference, but.....
I am having great luck with this set up:

guitar > compressor > Overdrive/cleanboost > EQ > chorus > noise gate with phaser in the noise gate loop > amp > delay in the amp fx loop.

I also sometimes put a Dr. Distorto pedal in place of the booster, and the sustain screaming leads are great and they dont have that buzzy fizzy wax paper distortion in them that you get with solid state preamp distortion, for example.

You seem to post alot of negative comments when people ask a question.

First have you ever done a search, i am a computer geek and I get tired of pooring through the data, half of it has nothing to do with what you are looking for when you do a search.

Second no matter what search he does will never have his exact setup.

Third, instead of leaving a negative comment, if you dont want to answer the thread then dont read it and dont answer in it, that simple!

Now to the poster, if you want an to ask a question give us all the details, you ask what order your pedals should be in and then only tell us one pedal. If you give us all your pedals i am sure there are a few people here that will answer.

Hi Seymourstilleto.

Just follow the basic rules. then experiment.

Ive settled on this after years of messing.

tuner> true bypass box in > send >
wah
ts808
BB pre amp
DS 1
74 vintage P90 > true bypass return > out > Lonestar

FX loop send >
MXR Stereo Chorus >
EHX Deluxe Memory Man >
Boss DD7 > FX loop return.

Have fun, Paul.[/img]

Where to get ideas:
Download manuals for multi-effect devices. See how they chain effects together, especially the cheap ones that don't give you the option of creating your own chain.
But experiment. A long time ago I decided I liked chorus and flanging after reverb and delay, unlike most multi-effectors.
Each delay repeat has a slightly different sound because each repeat gets flanged at a different place in the flanger's sweep.
I picked this up from the Mark III reverb, which comes before the effects loop.

I guess it would of helped if I gave you all my pedals. I have set them up guitar, wah, overdrive, noise suppressor in front then eq,echo and bbe sonic maximizer in the loop. Thanks everybody! The thing that helped the most was putting the echo/chorus in the loop instead of in the front of the amp.

General Rule:

Boosts, OD's, Tuner in Front
Modulation based effects through the loop.

My setup: Mesa Lonestar or Mesa DC-5 or Fender Concert II

In Front: Guitar-X2 wireless-Turbo Tuner-OCD-RC Boost.

In loop:Eventide Timefactor

I do have some vintage amps that do not have a loop and in this case everything goes in front with the Timefactor last in the chain.

siggy14,

RE: "You seem to post alot of negative comments when people ask a question.". Really? Provide evidence for that claim. I would put my signal-to-noise ratio up against any poster on this forum in terms of the volume of specific information I freely provide. There was nothing negative about my comment on this thread. I politely asked seymourstiletto to do a search for that topic because a) he may not otherwise be aware of the fact that that topic has been exhaustively covered on this forum, and b) that I myself have already provided a great deal of specific detail on this topic that he might be interested in reading without my having to type every bit of it all over again.

RE: "First have you ever done a search, i am a computer geek and I get tired of pooring through the data, half of it has nothing to do with what you are looking for when you do a search.". Thousands of times. Further, does the fact that you get tired of looking for information automatically obligate me or any other poster to re-type everything they have ever posted on a given subject just to convenience you? That's just silly.

seymourstiletto,

My apologies if my comment came across as anything but helpful, since that is how it was intended. You will find the exact answer to your question, at least as I see it, in several of my previous posts by using the search function that the forum board has provided. Please feel free to contact me if any of your questions on the topic are not answered to your full satisfaction.

I know it is a pain sometimes seeing the same question asked over and over again. But honestly most search functions on boards suck and you ended up wading through useless data.

Just the way your comment came off, sounded very condensending, as you state you didnt mean it to sound that way. I always try to be carefull how I word things for that reason.

Yeah man, you do kinda sound like an ***. No offense. Your words definitely come across as indignant and abrasive. If your true intent is to be helpful (and not just a wealth of information, as it seems to appear) then maybe you could try being a little more sensitive. People don't like being talked down to, no matter how vast the difference in expertise.

Its very easy to sound condesending or abrasive when posting when in reality your not intending to. ( we have all miscomprehended the odd text message ) .. if someone says something in person we can see their face and pick up on their intention.

I could have been indignant ( ie, he thinks Im an idiot ) at ifailedshapes suggestion my amps problems were related to the power supply.... it could have been,... It was one of the first things I thought, and it was an offer of help, so I am thankfull for his input.

No one knows everything, and some dont like to be 'told' something they didnt know... or already knew.

But this forum is a great wealth of knowlage and help for all of us. lets not spoil it by falling out over the way something may come across.....

P.S. most of you talk a load of crap anyway,,, :D ( JOKE )

As I use most of my effects on my clean channel I run everything including modulation and delay before the pre amp. I have heard pedals are generally not suited to being in effects loops that are designed for rack type effects? The delay I use for lead sounds fine this way when pushed through the overdrive channel as well.
Also I find that my Single Recto sounds better with the loop level at 0.

crisis,

There are no effects loops that are designed for rack effects. Are you playing through a Mesa amp of any kind when running your effects? If you truly enjoy the sound you are getting running everything before the preamp then fine, but be aware that in all likelihood you are not getting the best sound you could be getting, especially in the case of a high-end amp like a Mesa.

Manual states rack effects to be used in loop. Nothing about pedals. But its all preference.

Gibbyage,

You may be misunderstanding the admonition of the manual. The reason that it suggests that rack effects be used in the loop is because:

1) Most rack effects include or are limited to modulation and/or reverb effects, which belong in the loop regardless of whether they are contained in a pedal or a rack unit, and

2) The loop includes a Send gain control, allowing the user to adjust the strength of the signal entering the rack unit's input. Some rack units can be more finicky about handling strong signals at input, usually due to digital circuitry.

Pedals aren't addressed because they more commonly include overdrives, boosts, etc. than rack units do, and because their circuitry isn't usually as delicate, being more commonly analog than rack units.

I agree with Chris that for the best sound time based effects (rack or pedal) are best put in the effects loop.

This is especially true for delays. Let's think about it. If you are running an overdrive pedal before the amp...you put the delay after right?

But what if you are using the amp for your distortion...you put the delay after the distortion...in the effects loop

Delay before distortion sounds like crap! It's messy and over powering. The only way you can run delay before distortion is if you keep the mix level of your delay really low.

I'm not saying you can't do it! You can do whatever the heck you want with your pedals but if you come on a board asking people what is the best place to put them then the best place to put time based effects is in your effects loop.
