Ok.
In this picture, you're missing the middle wire, which I suspect is the one you pulled out.
It also looks like you pulled the middle pad off the pot, so that pot is no longer usable. Were you using a soldering iron, or did you just pull on it to remove it?
As you can see in this picture, you need to take the wire from the right of the picture (take it from the pot and just loop it around) and solder it to the spot where the middle wire went, then completely disconnect the left wire from the pot and tape the end off.
The wires being grey just means that's what color wire they had that day...doesn't really mean anything in the grand scheme of things.
