I am on an island and only have one of my guitars with me (my regular rig is in storage on the US mainland), and I was looking for a combo (because I don't have any of my cabs here yet) that I can use by itself, or with a good 2x12 cab...when I bring that over.
I was thinking of the 5:50, as I don't need monster power here...and it goes down to 5 watts, but after trying one out, I wasn't digging the crunch/rock tones. Beautiful clean sounds...but I play a lot of classic rock, and need more than just that.

What else does Mesa offer in a combo (besides the Mark IV) that gets a really great rock tone...and a better than average clean sound? I don't think I can get much better than the clean on the 5:50...but if I can get reasonably close, that should be ok.

It could be something no longer sold new, if necessary. The TA sounded like a good idea...but there's no fx loop (and it's not in combo form). I run mostly dry, just chorus/reverb on the clean stuff, via an intellifex...I don't have any overdrive/distortion pedals anymore, and I don't want to run out to get new ones if I don't have to.
Any ideas?

Stilletto ace combo. good clean tone AWESOME rock tones

I'll look into this one, as I've used some great EL34 amps in the past. I'm wondering how pricey it is, though. Does it have a lower power mode?

LoneStar Special.

LoneStar cleans are what the 5:50 was after, I believe. The amp crunches without pedals too? Can it do a good "La Grange" tone? :)

Oddly enough, that's one of the things I like it for (La Grange). I usually set channel 1 up as a sort of dirty clean and channel two is set up to sound identical but with the gain dimed (boost off). It's a great rock and roll sound... crunchy with lots of string sound.

That song does make a pretty good yardstick, doesn't it? :)
