I'm in a tough situation right now--I live in an apartment so I can't really "test" settings at volume and when the band practices I don't have a lot of time to twiddle knobs. Seems like the settings I think sound good alone (with the volume and the FX mix knob dialed way down) are really noisy (hiss--mostly on ch 3) and lack "cut" with the band.

Not sure how many of you play with a band but some good "live" settings/suggestions would be appreciated!

Honestly...

My home and gig settings are generally the same but there are some settings
I tweak for gigs or "at volume" rehearsals.

Here's when and what I generally tweak:

Wattage: Home = 10/45, Gig = 45/90

Volume: Home = a tad pass 7:00, Gig = 9:00 or slightly lower, a few times 10:00 (no mic, big spaces)

Gain: This I change depending on a guitar with humbuckers vs. a guitar with singles

Treble: Up or down, again depending on hums or singles

If you're getting hiss, you might be too "gainy" and if it's not cutting you might be "mid deficient."

I too pretty much use the same settings at home and at gigs. I only really switch between the different wattage settings.

Where do you guys mostly set your gain on the MIIc and MIV channels? I'm at about 1:30 or so on the knob--too much? Also, I'm using unpotted pickups in my Les Pauls...

12:30 for me in MKIV setting with buckers - guitar vol around 7 .. depends on PUPs of course. I'm in the PRS camp, mostly playing DGT / 59/09s

My settings are more or less the Workhorse settings out of the manual. I used to experiment a fair bit with settings and I'd use those settings as my baseline should I get too lost. Last time I reset I just left them.

If I wasn't getting enough cut I'd look at increasing the 750 and 2200 sliders. 2200 is a really punchy frequency band. If you're getting a lot of harshness look at reducing either the 6600 or your presence.

Around 1:30 with Mark IV mode. A little bit higher with Mark IIC+ mode.

Im not a huge dream theater fan but his settings are really good for live situations. Go to his website and set your head like the pics he has at the bottom. The channel volumes make a big difference and the bass knob settings dont go to much higher then what he has in mark 4 mode for volume or bass. EQ will completely change how you cut in the mix too. Watch his video and there is another video cant remember the guys name but he is a mesa rep. Set everything to 90watts and use the eq for channel 2 and 3. Hope that helps some. Its best to make small tweaks with the full band and not by itself.

Do any of you use a speaker simulator instead of mic cab? I have a combo with a sm57 with ear monitors. I hate the thin buzz saw type sound I get. Sound guy won't let Mark V breathe. so I play it in variac mode. It may be the old mixing board because I like my tone out of amp. I have been researching the Palmer PDI03 sounds like a lot big bands prefer this for the house sometimes combining both mic & sim. Palmer is a speaker sim+ loadbox. So I can crank my amp to get the precious tube tone yet monitor the volume off the stage. Any suggestions?

Any live clips of you and your band?
