I've been using a NR Tungsol in V1 for quite some time, after it beat out a number of newpro tubes in a tube shootout for v1, including Sovtek LPS, Jan-Phillips 5751, EH, JJ's, Sovtek A's and WA's, and perhaps a few other random samples.

Based on the theory that any vintage old stock beats all modern tubes, I bought an assortment of VOS strong testing raytheon, sylvanias, and a vintage RCA shortplate, and all of them fell short of the Chinese in auditioning.

I play rock, blues and country live. I've got a few weeks till my next gig, but from livingroom tests, the Chinese does all of these with a superb 'feel', a blooming lower mid for some good classic rock energy, and with the tube character slightly accentuating subharmonics and second harmonics with just a nice balance of 'air' - it makes the guitar feel ultraresponsive, with 'thud' and second harmonic feedback coming easily.

Very nice. Maybe I just got a good one, but I like very much.

Go spend the $15, fellow Nomadders.

+1. I also use a Chinese in v1 and v4 for the same reasons. Tucked in between are a JJ in v2 and a GT Russian2 in v3. I found this combo to be very articulate with some added "growl".

Hey Earache,

Try putting the Chinese you have in V4 as V3 (where the cathode follower position is on Ch2 & 3), and an Sovtek LPS for V2, and let me know if you think you get an improvement.

Just a reminder to never put a Sovtek LPS in the cathode follower position of a Mesa amp, or the tube will fry.

Is your JJ an 83, or an 803?

I'll try that as soon as I can get an LPS. My JJ is a hi gain. I do play some metal covers so I need the gain.

It originally was a skit from Cheech and Chongs Wedding album which was very popular when I was a teen. I needed a screen name and thats what popped into my head. Lots of laughs from those 2 when I was younger. Sorry for the off topic.
