Is there any downfall to using foot pedals instead of rackmount effects?

I have a mesa recording rectifier preamp and a mesa 2:100

To me, it's simpler to just have some foot pedals instead of a rack mounted effects unit.

My logic is this. I have pedals now for the preamp and I don't really want to have another pedal for the effects unit. I can save money by using a floor pedal for delay, etc.

If this is a viable option, any repercussions to having them from

guitar > foot pedal > preamp rather than using the effects loop on the preamp? Or am I better off to use the loop on the rectifier preamp?

Thanks, Kevin

This is not a perfect rule but, I like to place all time based effects after the preamp (or in the amps loop) time based effects being reverb, delay, flanger, phase, chorus and so on. And I like to place effects that affect a signals entire dynamic before the preamp mostly any type of overdrive pedal.
I’m not a pedal guy channel switching on the amp everything is done midi, also don’t stick to one type of say: chorus setting or delay setting so I have been rack mount since 1988. Will sometimes use a overdrive pedal out front but even then it is in a external loop controlled by midi.

I wish I understood MIDI.
Try some books! You don’t have to understand every aspect of midi to use it.

Allot of these books are geared toward keyboard work. So go to your local Borders or Barns & Nobel were you can thumb through a few.
