Just got this in last week. Traded my Mark IV for it.
It is just AWESOME!! I have owned damn near every amp under the sun and this amp brings it!
Reminds me of a cross between a super hot rodded marshall and a Diezel Herbert.

And yes I have owned tons of Marshalls as well as the Diezel VH4 and Herbert.
Its super clear....crunchy and louder then hell.
Has a Depth mod, gain boost and transformer swap. And his regular Recto mods.
This amp just CRUSHES!
Anyone else have a FJA modded Recto?

I am in..........LOVE!! :D

The gain boost...is this an extra tube stage or what?

The depth mod thing...is it adjustable or was it permanently built into things?

I don't own a Rec but am still thinking of having that depth mod done to my 295.

The depth mod is adjustable. Knob on the back of the amp. GREAT FEATURE!
The gain Boost is a pull knob and it sounds like it does kick in another pre-amp tube but I am not really sure. Its VERY NOTICEABLE and the gain is all usable.

Not sure if it's an extra TUBE stage. It does sound like there is an extra stage though. I have my boost on at all times.

Here is a clip I did with it.
Straight in the amp....no effects or boosts.
gain about noon on the modern channel.

This thing is a smashing machine.....

The tone is kicka** and I love how it's got the chunk on the palm mutes but still has that recto tone.

Are you running 6L6GC's in that Rec? Sure as hell sounds like it.

The tone makes me want to get one, to be honest. I really don't play music that would require such a tone though, but jeez, it'd be fun to mess with.

Anyway, thanks for sharing. I've heard so many good things about Jerry at FJA & this makes me more certain that I need to send him some things to mod. 8)

What kind of guitar and pickups did you use?
I have 2 Jackson soloists, one with a JB and another with a Invader pickup, and the tone is collosally different plugged into my recto. I get the really thick chug tone with the invader pickup at noon, and it takes the full gain to get my JB equiped soloist to do that.

I have a Custom Anderson guitar with Suhr Aldrich pickup in the bridge.
The amp maintains clarity while being a high gain monster.
The Vintage channel now sounds like a SUPER SUPER hot rodded Marshall with a hint of old school Metal.
Running a pair of 6L6's in it.
The amp is surprisingly versatile. I just chose to record some metal that afternoon.
Next time I will try to get a clip of the Vintage channel.

Did you have the mids scooped? Was the amp at very low volume?

The recording (thru my speakers) sounds very buzzy like the treble and/or presence is up high, the bass seems to over-power the speakers and the mids seem cut out.

I'm not trying to piss in your cornflakes, I'm seriously considering an FJA mod.

Would you please share your settings (EQ, Master, Output) & mic and speakers used in the recording?

Thanks,
Dom

I think the presence may have been too high.
In the room the amp sounded perfect. The clip seems more compressed then the REAL ROOM sound. The mids werent scooped.
Probably about noon on them.
Bass was about 1'clock as well as the treble.
Recording level was fairly loud but not gig level.
I had the gain about noon as well.
I just got the amp about a week ago and for me it takes a few weeks of band practice to really dial the amp in where I want it.
The cabs were a lynch box with Eminence Super V's in it.
cab #2 was a old Crate loaded with V30's and Celestian Heritage in a X pattern.
That cab is very trebbly. Not sure what mic's were used. The recording stuff was my Bass players. I am not much into reocording as he is and he has all the recording gear.
I was just exicted to make a clip since this amp sounds really really good in person.
I plan on making sone more clips of various settings on the amp in the next couple of weeks.
Ship that amp to FJA....you wont regret it.

Dan

Thanks Dan. The Super V's and V30's can be ice-picky. I was surprised that the mids were at 12:00.

The room you were in may have absorbed all those highs. A mic will reveal them for sure.

Also, the bass seemed very loose, are either one of the cabs ported?

HI Dom,

I think I had the DEPTH MOD turned up a little too much as well.
In the room it sounded great....
but for the recording aspect.....it came across too strong.
I am still pretty much a noob at recording.

I have owned alot of amps...Engls, Diezels, Fortin, Elmwood, Cameron, ......etc..
this amp smokes them all in the tone dept.

Dan

That's an impressive list of amps there Dan. It's good to hear you praise the FJA Recto over them.

Mic placement may be the key to really capturing the tone of that beast. Try different positions, angles etc until the recorded sound is the same as the room sound. I'll look forward to those clips for sure!

Yeah.....there are alot of great modders here in the states. too bad there is only so much money and TOO MANY AMPS!!

I've had a look around in australia but people only repair stuff. I series modded the fx loop myself but yeah i sure would like to play an fja or voodoo modded single rectifier to see if its better. Im just sceptical as to why mesa doesn't notice more and more of their users modding their amps, they should just start building them like this!!!!
