So far, I've played through a decent number of cabs and different types of speakers, and by and large, V30s have been my favorite speakers for playing through. However, I'm not sure that I like their recorded tone the most. I still want to play around with different speakers so I want to pose this question to you: Which speakers are your favorite to record with, and which ones do you really like? Any style, any amp.

Thanks!

for clean-ish tones, i've tried a mesa 2x12 with celestion alnico bluedogs that i really liked. having a cab with a mix of speakers is cool too, i think the studio i was recording at last had a marshall 4x12 with a mix of greenbacks, vintage 30's, and maybe 75's. mic each one and blend to taste. along the same lines, you could also put a couple different mics on the same speaker.

have you experimented with different mics and positions on the vintage 30? what mics do you have access to?

I think mic choice makes a lot more difference than speaker choice, within reason of course.

The trick for me was to find a couple of mics that most faithfully captured what the speakers sound like in the room. I settled on a C414 and an AT2035, but a couple of the budget ribbons weren't too bad either. I like some of the EV mics like the ND468 and RE20, but they are not as faithful as the SM7 or the two I ahve on there now.

After that I was able to switch speakers around to see which one translates the best to playback. For me the most accurate reproduction in playback happens when I use those two mics with an Eminence Commonwealth. Others that have worked well are the Weber 15 inch alnico Blue Dog and the Tone Tubbys. The EV is great also, but I like to use that one on stage rather than leaving it in the booth.

I really liked an open back 1x12 C-90 cab that I had, with two SM 57s; one dead center and one slightly off center. It created a unique sound. I also liked mic'ing from the back of that cab.
