Export transformers allow you to run your amp on mains power other than the 110V/60Hz grid in the USA. Europe and many other places in the world use a 220V/50Hz standard. If you plugged 220V into an amp that's configured for USA's 110V you'd most likely fry something. If you're lucky you'll just blow the fuse. If you're in the USA, you don't need one.
 
i've heard they pump a bit more plate voltage out than the regular simulclass trannys, thus effecting the tone in some positive way.
