EDIT: I recorded a real clip if anyone's interested.
It's here:

I play in a hard&heavy cover band, and we play "The Wicker Man" by Iron Maiden. So, I love Dream Theater and always try to put a petruccian riff or two in some songs: this time my idea was to blend that Iron Maiden's song with a part of "Honor Thy Father" by DT (from "Train of Thought"), and the result is shown in this midi:

Do you think it fits in right? or does it seem too forced? I wanted to ask for a suggestion because I'm well aware that probably my love for Deam Theater often overtakes my own common sense of how a song must be structured. Thanks, sorry again for the silly thread

EDIT: obviously it's not meant to be played at the beginning of the song, but after the first chorus.

Yeah I think it fits. I'd have liked to hear it on the guitar as opposed to the midi file though.

I think it added a little of your own influences to a great song. Others may disagree but why not add a little fun and your own influences to covers.

Some of my best concert memories are covers. I saw Rollins Band do Gratitude by the Beastie Boys. Soundgarden do Into the Void by Black Sabbath before SOMMS and before Monster Magnet did it. COC do Lord of this World by Black Sabbath. GNR do Live and Let Die by Wings. Living Color do Should I Stay or Should I Go by the Clash.

thanks for all the comments! I recorded a real clip if anyone's interested, the link is in the first post of the thread.

I haven't fooled with the Line 6 Spider, but that sounded pretty good! Your playing was tight too.

Was that a backing track or did you lay that down yourself?

Thanks clutch, you actually can get some decent tones from the Spider at low volume levels (turn it up past 9.30 o'clock and all goes into ****)... obviously talking about home practice. I wrote every part of the clip, trying to be quite consistent with the real songs. Drums and bass are written as midi parts (then a plug-in instrument was assigned to them), while guitar was recorded with a cheap pc mic and a crappy soundcard mic preamp.
