You'd rarely find me using a booster in front of a hi-gain amp, but I didn't expect this to happen...

Over at the JVM forum, there was some talk about TS-type pedals and whatnot and how folks use them in front of the JVM and other amps too. I never liked the idea of putting a booster in front of a hi-gainer, but I took my dad's vintage BOSS OD-1 pedal and set it to "booster mode", which is Level max and Overdrive null (no Tone knob on those early ones).

It brightened up my darker tones, but it took away some nuts too, so I was a bit "okay it's different but I like the other one better", but then I switched over to my Lead 1 RED preset... HOLY DJENT!!! I turned the pedal off and tbh, that tone is a bit muddy unless you turn it up and let the V30s do their ****, but when I smacked the OD-1 in front of it, I was like

I can't provide any clips (yet), but our lead guitarist will buy an SM57 in the near future and we'll throw some cash together for an M-Audio Fasttrack recorder so I'll try to "revive" this thread when I have some clips.

Sounds kinda like this at 4:17, though

Also, any tips on how to get that kinda tone without a booster? The OD-1 is fine but it's pretty noisy (no surprise given it's age) so I doubt I'd use it in a live setting.

You've just discovered the sole reason why boosters are popular with high gain amps! For the record, the Mark series are among the tightest amplifiers you can own.

Don't let preconceived notions get in the way of your favorite tone

Edit: There are also plenty of boosters that are much more quiet than a 30 year old Boss OD-1. If you want to look into it, a Boss SD-1 is just an OD-1 with a tone knob.

What's up man? Good to see your finding some good tones! You have the same notion as I've always had...never liked boosters ( or any pedals for that matter) in front of an amp. I've always liked the amp to work for itself, other then using the typical delay/chorus/flange/tremolo in the FX loop. That Petrucci clip at 4:17 is some pretty gritty stuff. Tonally, I think it's kind of on the fizzy side, but definitely has that tight, thick punchy sound the Marks are known for.

As far as alot of the Djent material going on today (Periphery,Veil of Maya,BOO,After The Burial) there's alot more focus on the rhythm side of the spectrum first, then the tonal side. Alot of bands I've worked with obtaining these tones are just using the ole drop B tuning (unless your like Meshuggah using an 8-string), cranking the mids, and driving the hell out of the amp. I've seen excellent djenty tones coming from the Mark amps right though to Marshalls, Rectifiers, Randalls, Bogners,5150s, Axe FX, etc. It really comes from the tightness of the playing with those tunings.

I thought the OD-3 is an OD-1 with a tone knob

Neptical, I'm aware of the "mechanical" side of metal rhythm guitar... I smash the strings like crazy and I rarely alternate pick. I also don't scoop the mids (though I did a little on that preset and I guess the OD-1's mids gave it the djent). But then again, my rig needs a desperate re-tube because it sounds muddy with a maple guitar with EMG's (!!!) and Presence set on 3 o'clock (!!!!!!!). So that might be in the way. :x

Jackie, sick..sounds like you know what's up! 8)

Yeah, a nice fresh re-tube can definitely turn an amp into a whole different beast all together!

Neptical, are you a sound engineer? Way cool if you are, I like sound engies... I'd be too much of a mad scientist myself though I doubt any band would bear with me

Hehe definitely, the only problem is I let GAS get the best of me and I emptied the gear budget for this superb Telecaster instead of new tubes. :( I mean the guitar is great but I wanna get my metal on through my Boogie!!! :(
