Purples have a bit less gain than Reds, so it may be a bit more difficult to balance R1 and Lead if you want sparkling clean and high gain br00talz. However, if you won't be using R1, you won't have any problems dialing in any amount of gain you want on either amp.
The fact that they've been recapped recently is a bonus. What's the catch with the short head? I for one prefer short heads, they are much more portable and just look right. I don't know, I just don't have a feel for long head Marks :D Anyway, if you happen to go with the Red, you can always order a new headshell either to Mesa (if you sell a kidney) or to board member gts.
Good luck!

Thanks... I keep reading that the purple is 'less' aggressive than the red and that has me a bit hesitant. The purple seller actually sold his red when he got this purple a while back... but who knows? That's why Im trying to get info from users who have had or heard both in person.. I have not.

I don't dislike the short head per say.. tho I do like the looks of long heads better. It's just that the custom headshell for the red stripe is not pleasing at all to my eye... and I really don't want to have to throw $200 more into another headshell.. very tight budget here.

Then I'd go for the Purple. I've got a Blue and it's aggressive as f*ck! Like I said, the Purple may be a bit less aggressive (if that's the term) than the Red, but you'll find the sound you are looking for. Even more so if you're not going to use R1, you can turn Volume 1 pretty high and that amp will roar. Also, if you've never played a Mark amp, look for videos explaining how to set them up (or explaining how the controls work). Either that or read the manual, these amps' controls don't behave like your typical Marshall.

Thanks again... Yeah, Ive got an 'artist' in the business that has explained how he sets up his Mark III so Im pretty good with a stock start and then tweak to my personal tastes from there. Right now Im leaning towards the purple stripe cuz it's semi local and I can actually get her tomorrow! I'd have to wait for the red stripe to be shipped... and then try and find a used headshell.

My purple has a great lead/gain sound and I never need to run volume or lead gain more than 7 or so for endless heavy sustain and meltdown distortion. Can't imagine a style that would want more than it gives. If you can try it locally, all the better.

Thanks for opinion... I still haven't decided yet. Thought I was gonna pull the trigger last nite but just couldn't do it. Just keep going back and forth on these cold feet of mine

In my opinion, it should be a no brainer for you: go for the purple.
There are some minor variations for each stripe. But they are almost the same amp, as they all share the same parentage with the IIC+. They offer a lot of versatility that allows you to dial all sorts of cleans (from jazz to funk) and leads (from blues to crushing metal).
The red is a good amp, but the purple should be as good.
So if you dislike the headshell of the red, go for the purple, especially since you can pick it locally.

Tubes will make a Mark lll sound the way it sounds, especially the tube in V1. I have both a black & a blue stripe Mark lll and if I wanted to make the blue tamer than the black I could just change the tube in V1. They have so much in common they're basically interchangeable amps, but I plan on having one of each stripe eventually anyway because they're the best amp ever IMO.
