I was playing with my solo feature last night and noticed that it does more than just add volume there is a slight tonal shift like the bright/normal switch. I set the output and solo knobs exactly the same and switched between the two with the foot switch and noticed a tonal change. I then set the solo knob lower than the output knob just to make sure I wasn't trippng and yeah it changes the tone. What got me doing this was noticing that in all Petrucci videos he has solo knob on max and I was trying to work out why. Does anyone else's amp do what mine does?

I've noticed the same. I suspect they did it on purpose to help a solo stand out a little more.

As for Petrucci, I've read he maxes the solo as a joke.

Engaging the solo boost adds another gain stage to the circuit, it's going to have a bit of an effect on the tone.

Really? I can't find anything in the manual mentioning that. But anything is possible.

I don't see that in the schematic, am I missing something?

Yup, that's it, V6B.
The manual, he say:
"With the EFFECTS LOOP in the HARD BYPASS (switch down) position the OUTPUT and SOLO are inactive and the overall volume levels will be determined by the MASTER control in the Channels. The EFFECTS LOOP adds a whole stage of amplification and the OUTPUT and SOLO come after this stage."

Dom

The SOLO knob controls V6B.

That I understand, I just don't see an additional gain stage for just the solo. To me it looks like the solo control is just a variable resistor on one side of a voltage divider (output), both of which are tied to V6. It was mentioned that the solo switches in an additional gain stage, I don't see it. The solo control is attached to the same gain state as the output (V6B), which is the last gain stage in the preamp.

Or am I way off here? I'll admit it, I'm no electronics expert and still trying to learn.
