I was changing the speaker in my MKIII and noticed there was space between the top of the chassis and the cab. I don't know if that is normal or common, I hadn't seen it before today (only got the amp a couple weeks ago). I tried to tighten the screws on the top, but they didn't want to budge.

Also, my amp didn't come with a fan - I suspect it is a good idea to get one; is it important, if so, any suggestions for a quiet one?

Thanks in advance
Jon

It's probably a SUS-4 mounting. It should sit about 1/4 inch from the top of the chassis.
It uses four rubber mounts to isolate the chassis from the cabinet and dampen vibration to reduce tube rattle.

Thanks much!

I suppose the fan is probably important - I have only had time to put in an hour or two a few times a week since I got it, but that amp can get toasty!

If you can position it right, it will make a DRASTIC difference in heat. Try to get it to blow directly on the middle two tubes and it will dissipate a ton of heat. The stock Mesa location only really cools the three right side tubes and maybe 30% of the far left.

Good idea... I usually use 'Class A' so it is really only the two outside tubes I need to cool. I should probably pull the 6L6's while I am not using them.
