My bro has 8 Celestion G12-65's from the 1980's. I'm getting 2 from him for my 2x12 I'm building :D . He heard that he would be able to get more $ if he sold them as matched pairs. I've only heard of matched pairs when it comes to tubes  .

Does anyone know anything about Celestion serial #'s and how to tell if speakers are matched??

i think he means matched pairs as in people would more likely purchase two speakers at once as opposed to buying them individually.

I may be wrong though

Their is a website that shows what the codes from those speakers mean... I don't have the address handy but I'm sure you can find it on google.

I don't know what he means by matched pairs either... never heard of it in regards to speakers.

Those are nice speakers btw - I've got a 4x12 loaded with them.

I think you guys are right - I'm not finding anything other than being able to track the manufacturing date.

At any rate, thanks for the feedback.

Charlie, glad to hear you like em as well. I can't wait to get them fired up. We should be finishing the cabinet this weekend, and my bro is bringing the speakers when he comes for Christmas. I am totally planning on disturbing the peace

If I'm not mistaken, Celestion reissued the G12-65, and yes, in the 80's there was G12-65s which are now sought after since they're original and England Made.

Many even thinks that G12-65 was replaced by the Vintage 30s. The magnet structure and frame are the same or very similar. The Vintage 30's was a bit more "modernize" for today's sound.

Did you post this question (Celestion SN# nomenclature) on the Weber Forum?

well I'm actually pounding my head against the wall because I had a Randall stack (Straight and Angle) of Celestion G12-65 powered by a Mark IIB 300 Series Coliseum in the 80's.

I still have the Mark IIB, but I sold the Randall Stack for cheap. I should have replace the speakers with Celestion G12-30s and kept the eight G12-65s.

Then in the mid 90's - 2000's, forums were mentioning "Remember those Celestion G12-65s? They were like Greenback with more 'umppfffs', low end, higher SPLs and handle more wattage!"

... and I think that's why Celestion reissued G12-65. I even think Weber has their version.

as far as matched pairs I really don't know other than they're broken in together.
