buddies Recto is noisy

well, a friend has a Dual Recto, recently retubed with JJ's High Gain set.

the amp was a bit noisy with the old tubes, and the new ones seemed to clear it up a bit, but now it seems to be getting worse and worse. The Lead Channel is sooo darn noisy when it's switched on, even running thru a gate.

any thoughts or suggestions? tech time?

One, of not more the tubes have gone microphonic. This has happened to me EVERY time I've tried JJ tubes. That's why I don't use them anymore.

Swap out all the preamp tubes to stock. Swap the JJ's back in ONE AT A TIME. You'll notice when the amp suddenly gets way noisier...that's your bad tube.
